PAGE 14 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, OCTOBER 16,2002 www.durhamrcgion.com Generals win, but lose players Nathan Horton and Colt King suffer injuries after separate fights in 9-3 win over Kingston BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer OSHAWA - The mood around the Oshawa Generals' dressing room was sombre considering they were coming off a 9-3 Thanksgiving Day win over the Kingston Frontenacs Monday. With good reason. Two separate fights left the team wondering how long they will be without without two of their star players. Leading scorer Nathan Horton suffered suffered an apparent facial injury and recent acquisition Colt King a hand injury following following fights with Anthony Stewart and Drew Kivell respectively. Horton and Stewart, two of the top NHL draft prospects who were line- mates on Canada's gold medal winning under-18 team this summer, squared off late in the game with Stewart landing a series of heavy blows to bring a quick end to the fight. "It probably shouldn't have happened, happened, but it did," coach and •general manager George Burnett said after the game. "I don't know the circumstances around it. I really couldn't see it because it was in the comer, so 1 don't know much about it." King, a Colorado Avalanche draft pick and national junior team prospect, easily handled Kivell in the first period, but returned for only one shift after having having his hand looked at by Generals trainer trainer Bryan Boyes. X-rays on King's hand were negative and Horton is listed as day-to-day. Bantam Flames are golden OSHAWA - The Clarington Flames had a golden moment in a bantam bantam tournament in Oshawa, going undefeated undefeated in five games to win the championship. The team posted relatively easy wins over Scarborough 6-0, Markham-Stouffville 4-0, Leaside 4-0 and Uxbridge 9-1 to advance to the championship game. In a rematch against Uxbridge, Clarington doubled the opposition 4- 2. Team members include Ally Slade, Colleen Bathe, Leanne Garislo, Chamelle Graham, Angie Haas, Courtney Hamilton, Jessica Holmes, Lindsay Jones, Krystal Lee, Emma Lunn, Carly Nemisz, Rikki Palmateer, Rosemary Quinlan, Brittany Sero, Danielle Sero and Lesley Sinopoli. Hoilon was continuing his lénifie season prior to the fight, pacing the Generals' Generals' high-octane offence with a goal and two assists before 2,926 fans at the Civic Auditorium. He now leads the team with eight goals and 17 points in seven games. Overagcr Anthony Aquino also shone, scoring twice and adding an assist as he continues to adapt to the OHL after spending the past three seasons playing NCAA hockey in the United States. Matt Maccarone, taking advantage of added ice time with the injuries, scored twice while Tobias Whelan, John Neal, Brandon Nolan and Evan Kotsopoulos added singles for the Generals, now 4-2- 0-0. Although the Generals scored 30 goals during a four-game home stand, Burnett was miffed his team surrendered two separate leads Monday. "It's nice to see lots of different guys scoring, but I'm still more concerned about how we're playing with two and three goal leads," Burnett said. "Right now, I'm more concerned about what we're doing on our half of the rink because because I think if you do a good job there, things will take care of themselves at the other end." The Generals took control of the game after Chris Bcckford-Tseu replaced replaced Kevin Drucc with the game tied 3-3 in the second period. Druce made only five of eight slops while Bcckford- Tseu turned aside all 17 shots he faced.
