Can goalies take Gens to the top? Hockey teams tend to go only so far as their goal- tenders take them. So, the question in Os- hawa, where expectations are growing higher as the Ontario Ontario Hockey League regular season approaches, is: Can the Generals win a championship championship with two 18-year-old netminders? While coach and general manager George Burnett hasn't identified winning an OHL championship as a specific specific goal this season, it's not so far-fetched a prospect should he receive top-notch goaltending from either or both of Chris Beckford-Tseu and Kevin Druce. "Right now, I think it's an excellent situation, very healthy competition where each is pushing and challenging challenging the other," says Burnett, Burnett, admitting, on The other hand, he doesn't like having two goalies the same age. "Both want the bulk of the games... Ideally, you'd like them both to be No. I guys." Druce posted decent numbers (3.47 GAA) and showed flashes of brilliance in 28 appearances of his rookie season a year ago. But it was Beckford-Tseu who really opened eyes when he was called up from the Oshawa Legionaires late in the season and shone in a five-game playoff defeat to the potent Belleville Bulls. Bulls head coach Jim Hulton, while saying he wasn't wasn't completely caught off guard by the stubborn Generals Generals in the playoffs, admitted Brian McNair Staff Writer bmcnair@durltantregion.com he was surprised by the tremendous play of Beckford-Tseu. Beckford-Tseu. "I think' the only question mark (this season) might be goaltending, but if Beckford- Tseu can duplicate what he did in the playoffs, then they'll be fine," says Hulton. "I think they're going to score a lot of goals." Indeed, with Jamie Johnson Johnson returning from a 78- point season for an overage year, Brandon Nolan seemingly seemingly ready for a breakthrough breakthrough campaign, Ben Eager boosted by being taken in the first round of the National Hockey League draft and Nathan Horton perhaps perhaps the best prospect in the league, the Generals should improve on offence. On defence, Oshawa now has two NHL draftees in Paul Ranger and Chris Petrow and three other proven OHLers in Tyler Cook, Mike Sellan and Dustin Van Ballegooie to go along with offensive-minded rookies John Neal and Kyle Raftis. "I think we have an outstanding outstanding group of people," says Burnett. "This is the most comfortable I've been (entering a season with the Generals)."
