A special ceremony was held on the first day of school, Sept. 3, to celebrate Mr. Bruinsma's bike ride to the east coast. The ride raised $27,000 for Bowmanville's Knox Christian School's Faith In Motion campaign. The campaign is raising money for an expansion and needs $384,000 in actual donations plus $ l .31 million in pledges over the next five years before it can start. To help, Mr. Bruinsma, who is the custodian at Knox Christian, jumped on his recumbent bike and headed for the east coast. The bike sits low to the ground and has a fairing on the front that makes the unit more aerodynamic. aerodynamic. "Our goal was to raise $20,000," said Mr. Bruinsma. "We actually raised $27,000, even from people who had nothing to do with Christian Christian education just because they thought it was neat to ride a bicycle to Nova Scotia.... I was very excited Durk Bruinsma: Spent 17 days pedalling to Nova Scotia during fund-raiser. about raising $27,000 - that's $7,000 more than we expected." It took 17 riding days for Mr. Bruinsma to reach his destination and once there, he headed back home in an RV with his wife and some friends. He said at his age, many people can't complete such physical activity and'he is grateful to God for allowing him the ability. "I look at a 62-year-old prostate cancer survivor and say you've got to be kidding me - a 2,300-kilometre bike ride," said George Petrusma, principal at Knox Christian. "Durk is the type of individual who is an inspiration inspiration to us at the best of times and lie's done it again." Although Mr. Bruinsma felt prepared prepared for the physical portion of the ride, he hadn't expected the mental aspect to be so great. "Out on the road you're all by yourself. There's bush on both sides of the road and it gets boring, but you just keep your goal in mind and pedal and pedal and eventually you get there," explained Mr. Bruinsma. "The mental one is as important as the physical one. You've got to be physically fit and you've got to keep that goal in mind, you have to get there... 1 hadn't expected the boredom. boredom. When you ride by yourself, you have no one to talk to. Imagine going for seven or eight hours with no one to talk to." But there were many things he enjoyed enjoyed on the ride as well. "I got to know a lot of people and learn about God's creation," he added. "I've driven that road a couple couple of times but it's like a whole different different road on a bicycle. The scenery is amazing. In a car you go by too fast, on a bike you take it in." Perhaps in the future he'll ride in western Canada, said Mr. Bruinsma, but start from Vancouver and ride with the wind.
