i "www.durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, SEPTEMBER 11,2002 PAGE A9 Equipment trashed at schools BY CRYSTAL CRIMI Staff Writer CLARINGTON - The first clay of school was frustrating and disappointing for some public board students. Lord Elgin in Bowmanville and Newcastle Public School pupils returned . from summer vacation to find some of ; their playground equipment burned ;dovvn. The fire department responded to • those files and several other blazes believed believed to be the work of vandals Labour Day weekend. "It hurts the students and demoralizes demoralizes tlie community," said Brian Harris, principal at Newcastle PS. "There's a lot of frustration on why some people do this and l think that's not only the feeling feeling of the community, but the staff and students as well." Tire object of destmetion early last Monday morning in Newcastle was a Tiny Tikes playground set containing four slides and a fire pole. A fence has been placed around its remains For safety safety reasons. There is no estimate yet of how much it will cost to replace. "The primaiy kids have no play ground. Normally we would have 75 to 95 students using it during theday on recesses, recesses, lunches, and mornings," said Mr. Hairis. "Recreation programs are in place to help entertain the kids." It is probably most disappointing to the students who entered Grade I, the principal suggested. One student approached approached Mr. Harris and said he had been looking forward to finally getting to use the equipment and now that lie is old enough to, it's gone. "The kids arc sad. They had a lot of questions to why someone would do that," said Mr. Hams. Students at Lord Elgin shared the disappointment disappointment last Tuesday when they discovered their big slide was ruined. "The slide was set on fire, it's one of those plastic ones," said Nancy Pitt, principal. "It's the twisty kind of slide, a really nice one... (The students) were disappointed. We're fortunate there's one on the other side." Anyone with information about any of the fires can phone die Clarington Fire and Emergency Department at 905- 623-5126.
