Planning for a healthy school lunch is a good way to start. "Kids need nutrients to function in school," says Elsie Azevedo, public public health nutritionist with the Hal- iburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District District Health Unit. But with many kids in the county rushing to catch a bus in the morning, Ms. Azevedo says if there is no time, or they just aren't hungry first thing, make sure they have something they can eat when they get off the bus. Basically, for children to get a healthy lunch every day parents need to be organized, she says. Planning lunch food before going grocery shopping, and having it packed and ready to go the night before will help. Teachers should also remember they are role models, she says, and if children see them munching on chips and pop then that is what they will want too. As well, instead of giving out candy, or other treats as rewards, things like stickers or pencils may be a better option. Sunny Orange Shake for a fast nutritious breakfast Makes 1 1/4 cups (300 ml) Serves 1 1 serving = 1 1/2 milk products 1 vegetable & fruit Ingredients 3/4 cup (175 ml) vanilla-flavoured, lower-fat yogurt 2 tbsp.
