Green Gaels bring home Founders Cup BY BRIAN McNAlR Staff Writer HALTON HILLS - The Clarington Green Gaels have won their third national lacrosse championship in the past five years. With a 7-6 victory over the Spartan Warriors of St. Catharines Sunday in Halton Hills, the Green Gaels capped an incredible season by winning the Founders Cup Jr. B championship. championship. The win came just two weeks after the Green Gaels were swept by the same St. Catharines team in the Ontario Lacrosse Association final. "I don't think there was ever a point where we said we couldn't couldn't do it, that was the biggest strength of our team," said head coach Brad MacArthur. "I'm just ecstatic. The kids worked so hard." The Green Gaels won five games in as many days at the tournament, including a 7-5 overtime decision over the host Halton Hills Bulldogs in the semifinals Saturday. Clarington finished first in its pool with wins of 16-2 over. New Westminster, Westminster, 8-5 over Edmonton and 16-2 over Winnipeg. "Ft was awesome, especially because it was unexpected," said Zach Greer, who was called up from the provincial champion Whitby midget team and was named a tournament all-star. "We were the underdog." Clarington earned a berth at the tournament the hard way, charging back from a 2-0 deficit against favoured Onondaga in the OLA East final to win its third straight playoff series 3-2.
