PAGE A10THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 19,2002 Durham Employment Network meets June 20 DURHAM - The Durham Employment Network (DREN) is holding its first-ever annual general meeting, along with a grand opening celebration of Industry Industry Canada's initiative, the Community Access Program, on Housing starts roaring in Durham DURHAM - The Oshawa area continues to see a rapid increase in housing starts showing its best performance performance since 1989. Figures released released by the Canada Mortgage Mortgage and Housing Housing Corporation Corporation (CMHC) show that new home construction construction in the Oshawa Oshawa census metropolitan area (CMA) remains remains strong. The City of Oshawa recorded 71 starts, up 30 from last year. Whitby recorded recorded 181 starts, up 88 from last May. "With the outlook for Os- hawa's local economy expected expected to remain remain positive for the remainder remainder of 2002, the new home construction construction market market will continue continue to post solid gains throughout throughout the year," stated Beverly Kuepcr, market analyst with CMIIC's Ontario Ontario Business centre. Nationally, housing starts rose up 10 per ccnt to 203,200 SAAR (seasonally (seasonally adjusted at an annual rate) in May from 184,500 SAAR in April. Housing Housing starts in urban centres in Ontario climbed to 82,300 SAAR in May, from 71,600 last month. Single detached units rose to 50,300 SAAR, and multiple starts increased to 32,000 SAAR.
