PAGE 16 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 29,2002 Dodgers add depth to young pitching staff BY BRIAN LEGREE Spoi ls Editor OSHAWA - The youngest team in the Intercounty Major Baseball League just got a little younger. The Oshawa Dodgers have signed 19-year-old twins Michael and Steven Reiss. The pitchers were both taken in the 2000 major league baseball draft, Michael in the 26th round by the Milwaukee Milwaukee Brewers and Steven went a round later to the Minnesota Twins. Both players didn't sign with their respective clubs and arc eligible for the 2002 draft in June. Since being drafted, the brothers have played at the University of Houston Houston and Seminole Community College in Florida. The brothers, who hail from Thornhill, will add to the depth of Os- ha wa's pitching staff, says manager Troy May. "Now we have enough pitching to make some moves," says May, noting he can "go to the (bull) pen right away" if the starting pitcher struggles early in a game. The Dodgers now have eight pitchers pitchers on their staff and might go with four starters and four relievers, says May, adding the average age of his pitching staff is "probably 22" with the addition of the Reiss brothers. Oshawa took a 2-4 record into Tuesday's home game against Kitchener Kitchener (after our deadline), after splitting splitting a doubleheader with St. Thomas Saturday at Kinsmen Stadium. The Dodgers were blown out S-0 in the opener, but rallied to score a 5-4 TROY MAY 'Now we have enough pitching . to make some moves.' win in the rematch. Ken Cal way had two hits for Oshawa Oshawa in the opener, with Adam Clarke taking the pitching loss. Oshawa made four errors in the game. "You make mistakes in this league and the other team capitalizes," says May. In the second game, Kacl Raciop- pa, Ryan Crotin and Terry Arges had two hits apiece. Ryan Mel lor got the pitching win, with Darryl Jennings earning the save. The Dodgers, who opened with six home dates in their first seven outings, host Hamilton Saturday for a double- header at Kinsmen Stadium. The action action starts at 2 p.m. Redmen drop opener 11-9 ST. CATHARINES - Barry Johnson Johnson was right. The Brooklin Redmen general manager manager said during training camp he believed believed the St. Catharines Athletics would be the most improved team in the Ontario Lacrosse Association's Major Series this season. The Redmen found out just how improved improved the Athletics are'Saturday when the two teams hooked up in Brooklin's first game of the regular season. The Athletics outscored Brooklin 4- 1 in the third period to score an 11-9 victory. St. Catharines is now 3-0 on the young season. The Athletics led 4-3 after the first period, but Brooklin rode a second period period hat trick from Kasey Beirnes, the club's first round draft choice, to an 8-7 advantage after 40 minutes. Beirnes wound up with four goals on the night. Ken Millin, Steve Toll, Brad Reed, Phil Greenen and Brad Cann also scored for the Redmen. Shawn Williams had three assists. Rob Blasdell went the distance in goal for the Redmen. The Redmen play their home opener this evening at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre, facing Akwesasne at 8:30 p.m. CLARINGTON'S 'KclT PROFESSIONALS Call today so that one of these fine businesses may serve you!
