Brooklin Merchants roll after coach gets ejected Senior team rallies from four-goal deficit to beat St. Clair BY CHARLEY MISNER Special to This Week WALLACEBURG - After falling 14-5 to the Owen Sound Montana Woodsmen in their home opener late last month and trailing by four goals midway through their second game, the Brooklin Merchants Merchants needed some kind of inspiration inspiration to stem their losing ways. The impetus, which didn't come from a play on the floor, carried, them to an :1.1:9, victory over, the St:': Clair Storm .in' an .Ontario Lacrosse- Association Senior game Saturday. Down 7-3 with 6:26 left in the second period, Merchants coach Paul St. John, upset at the officiating officiating in the game, was ejected for throwing a water bottle at the referee. referee. "We needed a spark," he said. "It shouldn't have to come from the coach being ejected, but we weren't getting any calls...nothing was going in our favour.". The vacancy behind the bench was filled by general manager Mike Gray, who handled the coaching duties duties for the remainder of the game. The emotion and the message behind behind St. John's ejection obviously caught the attention of the players, as they went on a scoring tear. Before the buzzer went to end the second period the Merchants potted six goals to tie the game 9-9, mainly due to the effort of 45-year- old veteran Tom Wreggitt, who scored three straight goals in a 66 second span. Tyler Derks and Wreggitt, with his fourth of the game, scored for the Merchants in the third period to cap off Brooklin's comeback. Wreggitt, who is back after a three-year absence from competitive competitive lacrosse, has posted 4-6-10 totals totals in the Merchants first two games of the season, which has not gone unnoticed by St. John. "Tommy's played great," he said. "While he has scored goals for us, he does great work away from the play. He's great on loose balls, like on Duke McNutt's goal in the second second period, for example. "He's a confident player. His confidence rises when the opportunity opportunity comes, with getting more shots on net and getting more chances (offensively)".
