Rather, co-workers at the Whitby Whitby Jail, where the married mother of three worked the past 15 years, banded together and formed a support support team to assist her and her family family after she was diagnosed with the fatal illness in February. Still, they felt the need to do more so the group of seven, calling itself "Marlene's Team," strapped on their walking shoes and on Sept. 29 participated in Durham Region's Region's first "Walk to D'Fcet ALS," raising $1,267. Overall, the five-kilometre walkathon, organized by the ALS Society's Durham chapter, raised $55,000 for ALS research and local support sendees. A week later, on Oct. 7, Ms. Burgess died in her Whitby home. She was 53. "Her loss was devastating. Because Because it is such a cruel illness and it was so difficult for her, in the end - people suffer so deeply - it was a relief. But it left a big hole in our lives," said 'Marlene's Team' member Judy Skinner, a community community correctional officer at the jail where Ms. Burgess worked as a registered nurse. The group formed a support team to provide in-home care for Ms. Burgess to relieve caregivers and family members, Ms. Skinner said. The group wore large pink hearts labelled 'Marlene's Team' during the walkathon. Jail staff was extremely extremely supportive of the fund-raiser, Ms. Skinner said. "We wanted to do something to show our support for Mar lene...
