It was the opponents who were left frowning, as the Ea gles opened the Provincial Junior Junior League hockey season this past weekend with a pair of impressive wins. Friday in Lindsay the Eagles Eagles scored twice in the third period for a 5-3 win, while Sunday night at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, four power play goals led the home side to a 6-3 win over Port Hope. Coach and general manager Curtis Hodgins was particularly particularly pleased with the effort of his hockey club, considering that through much of the pre- season the team was unable to ice a full line-up due to injuries. injuries. "To come out of the first weekend with two wins is terrific," terrific," said Hodgins following Sunday's win. "The guys arc really pulling for each other. We've got some team unity already. Everybody that's here wants to be here." In both weekend outings, a strong third period contributed to the victories. In Lindsay, third period goals by Nick Stacey and Jon Ross (into an empty net) broke open a 3-3 lie after two periods. That pattern pattern was continued on Sunday night as Pat O'Halloran, Andrew Andrew Beck and Kyle Crouch scored in the final period to break a 3-3 lie. Matthew Caruana, Ross and Colin Baker also scored for the Eagles against Port Hope. A major contributor to Sun day's win was the pow'er play, as the Eagles scored four times with the man advantage, including three straight markers markers in the second period. To have the power play enjoy that kind of success only two games into the season season is both a surprise and a relief relief for Hodgins. "That's a good sign," lie admitted. admitted. "We haven't worked (on the power play) at all. We gave (the players) a power play breakout to get out of our end and then we just told them to let their skill take over." The Eagles have a week off to savour the quick start. Trenton Trenton will visit the Recreation Complex on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. THE SCOOP - A moment of silence was held prior to the start of Sunday's game to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks in the United Slates.
