Autofest roars into Durham this weekend BY CRYSTAL CR1MI Stuff Writer DURHAM - Local streets will look like a blast from the past when mid-century muscle cars and antique autos flood Oshawa for the 8th annual annual Autofest. Canada's biggest one-day car show will involve more than a thousand cars dating from 1974 and earlier. Autofest ■'runs Aug. 24-26. "It's bigger and better," said Gary Challice, a member and chairman for the Motor City Car Club which is behind behind Autofest. "People arc travelling farther distances for it." The car show isn't the only attraction attraction to Autofest, which is at the Oshawa Oshawa General Motors Headquarters. Car-lover excitement begins Friday Aug. 24, with free admission to the Canadian Automotive Museum, a .silent auction of collectables and free Soap Box Derby at Bond Street between between Centre and Arena streets on Saturday, the show on Sunday and much more on each of the three days of Autofest. "Last year we had in excess of 10,000 spectators," he said. "The first . show was only 300 cars. It's gone from 300 to 1,400, but there's a lot more activities now." "We're trying to bring some tourism into Oshawa and in a small way, bring Oshawa into the tourism market," said Mike Ka- lynko, another chairman for the Motor City Car Club and owner of a 1938 Hudson. Hudson. David McAdam loves showing off his toys at Autofest: Autofest: a 1928 Model A Ford and a 1955 Chevy pickup. He bought his Ford in 1963 when lie was 21 and has hung onto it ever since. Friends and his wife helped him restore the car from the ground up and in 1987 it was 100 per cent finished. "I like to drive it, I like the sound of it - Fords have a sound of their own," he said. "I could never sell it no matter how hard up for money I was: I love it. I told my wife if something ever' happened to me, she could (sell it) but then the kids would want it because they love it." He said it's not just the unique headlights and front end of the car he loves, but the pride it gives him to show off the car he built and win trophies and prizes awarded at the show.
