On patrol As another school year ends, Clarington safety patrollers are thanked for a job well done BY JACQUIE McINNES - Staff Writer CLARINGTON They're at school before some of their peers are even awake. In cold, heat, rain and snow they answer the call to duty even when sometimes it would be way more fun to be watching cartoons or just hanging out in the playground playground with their friends. At the tender age of 10, 11 or 12 they've answered a call to a higher cause and put on the universal uniform - an orange vest -- that identifies them as safety patrollers. All Clarington patrollers were honoured in a special ceremony at the end of the school year recently for their dedication to this volunteer work. Two patrollers were recognized for their extraordinary extraordinary commitment and leadership in the job. Nick Roberts Pearson from Vincent Massey Public School and Justine Galea of Newcastle Public School were named Clarington's Safety Patrollers of the Year. For Justine, in her second year as a patroller at Newcastle, Newcastle, the duties are a little different different than the traditional patroller's patroller's job that might come to most people's minds. The work of the Grade 6 student is not done in the street but in the schoolyard where she patrols patrols the playgrounds, ensuring ensuring kids are sale and the play is fair for all. Every Thursday, her designated designated day lo patrol, Justine works the yard before school, at lunch break and during the recess periods. "1 go in the morning and get a walkie-talkie and go out in the field," she relates. There she monitors the activity, activity, instructing her peers when they are doing something something inappropriate like "climbing the soccer net." But one of her primary functions, functions, she says, is lo assist those who get injured. "I'll ask a teacher whether it's worth going to the office," she relates, recalling one incident incident where a kindergarten student lost two teeth when he fell off a bike. Fortunately, Fortunately, she adds, they were wiggly anyway. For the youngest students, Justine is a role model who they can turn to not only for help under duress but for attention attention and comfort they may not otherwise receive in the schoolyard. "I like the little kids. They all cling onto me," she relates of her young fans. Her staff supervisor at the school, Scott McKeown, says Justine, known as 'The "Captain" around Newcastle. : " P.S.V "exemplifies excellence, in' a variety of areas. "Being Captain requires wearing many hats," he says. "Justine wears these hats admirably." admirably." She develops the duty schedule for her fellow patrollers, checks on the patrols patrols daily, assists with fundraising fundraising activities and finds replacement replacement patrollers when someone is ill, not to mention mention everyday acts of kindness kindness and consideration, he notes. Although Justine has never been required to save someone from a fire, relates Mr. McKeown, "sometimes heroism can be displayed over a period of time or events." This is the case with Justine, he says. For Nick, also in Grade 6, the duties are of the traditional traditional patroller, ensuring students get across the road safely on their way to school. The safety patroller role transforms Nick, relates Maureen Running, Vincent Massey's principal who commends his level of dedication dedication to the program. The quiet student has become a real leader within the program program taking added responsibilities responsibilities upon himself in his second year in the role, she says. "He has been a very reliable reliable and conscientious safety patroller," she says. "He performs performs his duties very well and on top of that lie has taken it upon himself to monitor the schedule," she says. At Vincent Massey there are two crosswalks that are patrolled and if another patroller is ill or cannot fulfil their obligation to a shift, it is Nick to the rescue, always happy to ensure the job is done, she relates. "He was promoted to lieutenant in the fall because of his commitment to the safety patrol program," says Ms. Running, noting when the selection committee had to find someone to chose as the school's outstanding patroller patroller "we all thought of Nick," There arc more than 100,000 safety patrollers across Canada between the ages of 11 and 14, according to the Canadian Automobile Association. Each year they help more than three million children stay safe during the school day. >»*:}• " . ~ jji-.
