Last week, Peel Regional Police would not confirm reports reports that a ransom demand for Mr. Ku's safe return had been received, saying only that a team of investigators have been working on the case 24 hours a day. Monday, the disappearance remained under investigation, with nothing new to report, says Constable Heather Andrews of Peel police. The agency has said police have found nothing in Mr. Ku's background that would suggest an abduction or kidnapping, but have not ruled out foul play. Mr. Ku, who came to Canada Canada from Taiwan 14 years ago, is owner and principal of Great Lakes College, a private school attended mostly by students from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. "As of May 22, over a period of 17 months, there are now 93 residents with ESBL E. coli in Durham Region," Dr. Reynolds said. "Twenty-one have cleared the ESBL E. coli on their own; four people may have had the organism as a contributing factor in their death, along with other serious medical conditions, conditions, and another 21 elderly people have died who were at one time ESBL carriers but we have no reason to suggest suggest ESBL as a contributing cause of death." Of the four deaths here, pneumonia was a factor in three cases, Dr. Reynolds said, noting in the fourth case, the E. coli bacteria had entered the individual's individual's blood. Dr. Barbara Yaffe, the associate medical officer of health for Toronto, told reporters the City's health department department was informed of one individual who had tested positive for the bacteria. The person had transferred from Durham to a long-term facility in Scarborough. Scarborough. She said the three roommates of the individual have since become positive, but all are fine. "It's concentrated in one home," he said, noting there is also one death under investigation in York Region. But, here in Durham, individuals in eight facilities have been impacted, said Dr. Reynolds who would not confirm whether all of those sites were healthcare healthcare facilities or seniors' facilities. "I will not label any specific institution institution or facility," she said. She reported the focus is on containing containing the organism, which is believed to have caused the largest outbreak of the ESBL strain of E. coli in Canada.
