THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 9,2001 PAGE 11 Finding a summer job takes a little work There's no time like the present to start looking for employment BY MANDY O'CONNOR Special to The Statesman DURHAM - As the school year winds down, many students will begin thinking about finding a summer job. For these students, there is no time like the present, according to Kim Lutcs-McKay of Job Connect at Durham College. "Although they're called summer jobs, most employers are thinking about hiring in January or February," said Ms. Lutcs-McKay. "It's for that reason that we provide resource centres through the Job Connect program so students can go in at any given time and find out about opportunities." However, the problem is many students students aren't aware of the job search resources resources available in Durham Region. i The Summer Job Service, provided by the John Howard Society, YWCA and Durham College Job Connect, is an icbal'choicc for students, j It's available to students and youth between the ages of 15 and 24, or up to 2j) years of age for those with disabilities, disabilities, all of whom arc planning to return to school ih the fall. The program began April 1. ; "The john Howard Society registers and prepares, the student for the job," explains Ms. Joelle Holt-Morey, a pro- : gram administrator for the John 1 Howard Society. "So we go in and do i orientations and workshops directly in ! the hig j schools, or we have them come : here. The college, works on the con- ' tracts with the employers. They provide us wth the postings and then together we natch the people with the employ er. I ?! Inch job placement lasts nine wcks. The employer receives a $2 an hoi" subsidy for each participant it hies for the summer. Ms. Holt-Morey estimates they are wrking towards placing 1,079 youth tls summer. The Summer Job Service offers jany benefits. Registered students ave access to many services that can iclp them find a summer job. There are Computers, a job bank, a telephone and answering machine and a library full of information about apprenticeship programs, programs, colleges and universities and business directories. ,. There are also people available to s help students one on one with any prob- j; lems they may have regarding job i, n searching. Three university students are run- I ning the program. Ms. Holt-Morey said t it helps when students have a peer they ;j can go to for help. V "Some people are nervous about ap- j! preaching employers," said Ms. Holt- 1,! Morey. "So they have someone they can talk to who's at a peer level, to re- jj assure them, give them some pointers, <i give them some guidance." (J Ms. Holt-Morey said the best bene- Ij fit is everything is free. However, she is sure to make it clear ;i they are not there to just give you a job. ;! "It's just letting youth know they •J have another option in their job search," II said Ms. Holt-Morey. "It's not the be- i all, end-all, because we try to encourage encourage them to understand it's not a temp service. We're not going to give them the job. They need to put some effort into it."
