PAGE 16THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY2,2001 (f WALTER PASSARELLA/Statesman photo Sports reporter Chris Fciscicmo is ready to head to the lakes to tackle the new fishing season. season. Hooked on fishing BY CHRIS FASCIANO Special to the Statesman Fishing, at first glance anyway, seems to be a pretty simple sport. Drop a line in the water and wait for the fish to bite. If only it was really that simple. For the occasional fisherman, fisherman, it can be overwhelming to walk into a sports store and be expected to have any idea what to buy. Where do you start? When I walked into a local outdoors store and entered entered the fishing section I couldn't believe all the options options available. How am I supposed to choose what to buy? It turns out there are a lot of things to consider when buying a rod. What kind of fishing will you be doing? Where will you be fishing? What are you fishing for? But price is a factor, too. Some of tire rods I saw were $489. "Price is always a factor," said Derek Mitchell, an employee employee of Gagnon Sports in Oshawa. Mitchell can understand understand how it can be confusing. confusing. "The problem is there are about a billion reels and it's the same with rods," he said. You also have to consider how you will be fishing. There arc different rods for different types of fishing. If you're not sure exactly what type of fishing you will be doing, the best choice is a six-and-a-half-foot, two- piece rod, he says. The same rule goes for reels. For every job there is a specific tool. There are reels specifically for casting and others for trolling. While both rods and reels are suited to specific tasks, there are some that are more versatile and can do multiple tasks. If you're not sure, ask the experts. When looking for lures, there are enough choices to confuse anyone. There are walls covered and hundreds of selections to choose from. There are plastic worms, crawfish, or frogs and the choices don't end there. Some have tails that wiggle, some are colourful, some have hologram glitter inside and some are garlic-scented. There are lures with reflective reflective surfaces, reduced line twist and one that even emits a sonic vibration. (A sonic vibration - how cool is that?) With lures, like the rods and reels, it all depends on the type of fishing you're doing. Will you be casting or trolling? What type of fish will you be fishing for? Where you are going to be fishing is a big factor. You have to consider the depth of the lake, the weed factor and even the clarity of the water. For a lake with a lot of weeds, you want to use a top water lure to avoid becoming snagged over and over again. In a deep lake you probably probably want a heavier, bright- coloured lure. It needs to be heavy to sink, although you can add a weight or a sinker to get it to the bottom. It needs to be bright so it can reflect the light and be seen at the bottom of the lake. Finally, you want to consider consider the type of fish you are trying to catch. Warm water fish need very specific lures. Each type of fish will go for something different. In cold water, the lures become more general. More fish will tend to follow the same lures. Most importantly you will need a licence, because Fishing Seasons for Division 6 (Including Durham Region) Yellow Perch - April 28 to Nov. 15 Black and White Crappie - April 28 to Nov. 15 All Trout - April 28 to Sept. 30 (Includes Brook, Brown, Rainbow and Lake Trout) Splake - April 28 to Sept. 30 Pacific Salmon - April 28 to Sept. 30 (Includes Chinook, Coho and Pink Salmon) Atlantic Salmon - April 28 to Sept. 30 Lake and White Roundfish - April 28 to Nov. 15 Sturgeon - April 28 to May 14 & June 15 to Nov. 15 Walleye and Sauger - May 12 to Nov. 15 Northern Pike - May 12 to Nov. 15 Muskellunge - June 2 to Nov. 15 Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass - June 30 to Nov. 15 Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout can also be fished until Dec. 31 in all waters down stream of Highway 2 in Durham Region. xxxxxxxxxiixxxxxxxixxxxxxxxiiixixxiixiixxxxxxi; MORTGAGE RATES BEST RATES AS OF: APRIL 20™, 2001 ADJUSTABLE RATE MORTGAGE 4.79% 6 MONTHS 6.10% 1 YEAR 5.80% 2 YEAR 6.00% 3 YEAR 6.10% 4 YEAR .' 6.40% 5 YEAR 6.28% 7 YEAR : 6.70% 10 YEARS 6.95% ALSO AVAILABLE: "MORTGAGES WITH UV TO 5% CASH BACK" Mill WE IIANDLE THE TRANSFER OF AN EXISTING MORTGAGE AT NO COST! The card is good for three years, but fishermen also need a seasonal licence. There are two types of licences available. The seasonal sports fishing licence is a necessity for the die-hard fisherman. This licence allows you to have the highest limit of fish you can keep. For the occasional fisherman, the conservation conservation fishing licence might be better. The limit of fish you can keep is lower, but if you're not a rabid fisherman, it likely won't matter. The cost of the licences is $20.50 for the sport licence or $12.25 for the conservation licence.
