THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, APRIL 18,2001 PAGE A11 There's a fresh face at school board trustee meetings Erin Cullen named new public board student trustee BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer CLARINGTON - Erin Cullen wants students to know they have a voice on the Kawarlha Pine Ridge District School Board. The 17-year-old Port Hope High School student will serve as student trustee to the board for the 2001- 2002 school year, and will shadow current student representative, representative, Peterborough's Geoff Fucile, over the next three months. Her first order of business upon taking over the reins will be letting students students know they can come to her with concerns she'll be able to voice at the board table. "I'm hoping next year I can go to other schools in the board," to make students aware they have a representative, representative, says Erin, explaining she wants students to know "if they have something they want addressed, they can come to me." Having a student trustee is something relatively new to many boards, since the government mandated the inclusion inclusion of a pupil at the board table in the late 1990s. However, both the Peterborough Peterborough County and Northum- berland-Clarington boards of education, which amalgamated amalgamated to form KPR, had student student trustees in place before the ' government mandated the inclusion of such a role, over the last couple of years, so many major changes are happening, and the changes arc affecting students," she notes. "If there are more changes (in education), they need to have a student there to give their opinion." Erin was one of seven candidates from across the board to apply for the role of student trustee. Applicants had to provide an academic transcript, as well as letters of recommendation from their school principal, a teacher and another student. As well, each student had to fill out a general application and provide provide a resume. An essay on why the candidate felt they should be named student trustee was also required. "That was a difficult one, trying to sell yourself," says Erin, whose resumé contains a wide array of activities. She works part-time in a Cobourg restaurant, plays volleyball, basketball and rugby, has served for two years on student student government, and takes part in the academic heptathlon, heptathlon, the robotics team, the Model United Nations, and her school's formal committee. committee. She's also been active with a local swim team, and has volunteered with the Capital Theatre and the Ga- naraska Child Care Centre. Setting up a home page on the Internet to ensure information information is readily available to students is something Erin feels will help better represent represent students from across the board's vast geography. She believes the Web page will "increase student input because because it's important drat students students from all of the schools in the board are represented." says Grcg Kidd,- s]KikcsinjiiL . ._._ v jErin, who hopes to even- fof the board.
