THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MARCH 21,2001 PAGE 17 Gens edge top teams as season winds down Gain revenge on Belleville and Sudbury with a pair of 3-2 victories BY BRIAN LEGREE Staff Editor They have failed to qualify for the post-season for the first time in 24 years, but the Oshawa Generals are producing playoff-style hockey as they wrap up the Ontario Hockey League season. ■ The Generals turned in their best weekend of the season, knocking off two of the OHL's top five teams, turning back East Division-leading Belleville 3-2 Sunday at the Civic Auditorium on the heels of a 3-2 overtime decision over the Wolves in Sudbury on Friday. Sunday's win served as sweet revenge revenge for the Generals, who were hammered 9-3 in Belleville last Wednesday. "They had a little swagger to them the other night and they were laughing laughing pretty good at us," says Burnett. "I think you have to be humble when you win and I'm not sure the two points they lost tonight aren't going to hurt them in the standings and it's a credit to our guys to come back with such a strong effort." The Generals built a 3-0 lead through two periods on goals by Ben Eager (4th), Tobias Whelan (5th) and Scott Rozcndal (20th), but it turned into a 3-2 nailbiter during a 70-sec- ond span early in the third period, as Belleville defenceman David Cor- nacchia jumped into the slot to beat Derek Dolson twice. "I don't think we laid off Belleville, it just shows you how good they are," says Burnett. Speed skater finishes in top five at provincials Lining up against some of the top speed skaters in the province didn't seem to faze David Stewart. : That may be partly because the Bowmanville resident found out he belongs in the same group as some of the elite speedsters in Ontario. At the recent Provincial Championships Championships held in Waterloo, the 14- • year-old finished fifth overall in the junior men's division after setting personal best times in four évents. ; The Grade 9 student at Bow- -manville High School lowered his ! times in the 500m going from 51.99 ;to 50.28, the 777m from 1:22.14 to •1:21.45, the 1000m from 1:47.43 to ■ 1:45.45 and in the 1500m he beat (his best time of 2:47.37 crossing the 'finish line in'2:43:88, • The provincial-: meet attracted skaters from .Ottawa, Kingston, ;Belleville, Cambridge, Kitchçn- ;er/Waterloo, Sault. Ste. Marie, • Oakville and Brampton. ! David's fifth place finish overall ; left him just shy of advancing to the ■Canadian Championships in Prince ■ Rupert, BÇ next month, as the top .four in the age category will represent represent the province. You can't let that team have any time or space, that's for sure." The Generals have one game left in their season - Friday in Kingston. The Frontenacs have gone 0-9-1 in their past 10 games and should the Generals win, they'll leapfrog over Sault Ste. Marie in the standings, which means they would drop in the draft order from picking second overall to third overall. The draft order is a non-factor to Burnett. "We're playing to win, I think that's important for our club that we establish for our players that's why we're here," he says. "We're going to put our best foot forward on Friday night, I think it's really important in the scheme of things that wc leave with a really good feeling about what this team is capable of accomplishing, understanding understanding what's necessary to win. "Wc beat two good teams this weekend and we were worthy of both and that's how we're going to be successful successful next year." GENERALLY SPEAKING: Oshawa Oshawa fans chose overage defence- man Kevin Mitchell as the team's most valuable player this season. . .Belleville's Kyle Wellwood had two assists and now has 33-81-114 totals on the season, tying him with Jason Spezza of Windsor (42-72-114) atop the OHL scoring derby. Wellwood has two games remaining in the regular regular season, Spezza one, but it's worth noting that due to his commitments commitments with the national junior team, Spezza has only played in 55 games this season to Wellwood's 66.
