Anderson. Durham councillors and senior senior staff went to the Fern Resort Resort last Wednesday and Thursday Thursday so councillors, new and old, could gain a better understanding understanding of the pressures facing the Region this year. "It was a vcty good retreat," Mr. Anderson says. "Every department department had an opportunity to explain to all members of council council the position they're in... finance finance gave a very thorough Familiar faces back at Durham Police Services Board The Durham Police Services Services Board has appointed its chairman and vice- chairman for 2001. And, while Mr. Anderson says some councillors found the information a bit "overwhelming", "overwhelming", lie's hoping the discussions discussions will make way for a smoother budget process this year. He notes everything from the possibility of a tax increase to the demands of the police budget budget and the challenges of providing providing Durham's hospitals with funding was discussed. "They're all things that add huge dollars to the budget," he said, adding, "All of those things have to come to a head." Mayor John Mutton places a great deal of the blame for this year's tough budget at the feet of the Province. "Everything that has been downloaded is coming home to roost. Everything the Province has done is costing the Region big, big bucks. With social social housing it's up to us to bring it up to standards. Land ambulance ambulance is the same thing. Everything Everything downloaded is bare bones and we have to make proper services services out of them." Mr. Anderson, who reports councillors "worked very hard" during the retreat notes there were no decisions made and no motions or resolutions passed at the retreat. It was organized primarily primarily to bring councillors up to date on the challenges facing Durham this year, he says. n* Z\ Based on the stories of the renowned children's author Robert Munsch Adapted by Kim McCaw & David Savoy Directed by David Savoy Saturday, February 24 to ' ' :h Saturday, March 31 plus March Break performances March 12, 13, 15 & 16 Brunch Lunch Performance ( $ 17.95 ) Performance ^5-2.95y „ Sal. He says issues such as recycling recycling and garbage were high on the agenda while a lot of councillors councillors also raised concerns about the roads budget and the fact some major projects may have to be delayed. "A lot of them had concerns, they don't think we should be delaying (road construction projects) projects) but there's only so much money," Mr. Anderson adds, noting councillors are "going to have to give some things up to get some other things." Mayor Mutton says he is concerned about the roads projects, projects, especially work on Taunton Road which is needed to help accommodate increased traffic due to residential and commercial growth that has sprung up along the road. "We found there is a real need to increase the development development charges for roads related projects," says the mayor, one of those concerned about a delay. "We found there is very little DC money left for roads. It's time to look at DCs for roads." The collection of Development Development Charges for hospital projects projects was also discussed with Durham MPP John O'Toole, who is reported to have informed informed councillors the Province isn't planning to amend the DC Act. But, Mr. Anderson says with last week's cabinet shuffle, he's hopeful there will be room for more discussion on the issue with the new minister of municipal municipal affairs and housing, MPP Chris Hodgson.
