Children's Centre Faces $615,000 Cutback Br. 17S Youth Education Chair On April 1, 1998 funds available to Grandview Children's Centre will be reduced by $615,000. This drastic reduction in funding means Grandview must either cut hundreds of children from their programs; programs; allow waiting lists and times to grow; reduce the number of visits children children receive; or a combination combination of these options. The $615,000 earmarked by the Ministry of Health last May for rehabilitation services for children, will remain in Durham, but will only be available to children who can meet the admission criteria for Durham Access To Care (DATC). This money will no longer be used to provide therapy services services for children at a centre-based centre-based facility, but will instead, be used to provide "consultation" in a home/school program. "The bottom line", said Catherine Ambler, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Grandview, "is that hundreds hundreds of disabled children in Durham will no longer be provided with therapy services. services. We may be forced lo concentrate our scarce resources on those children who are the most severely disabled." This means that most of the children who may be losing their services arc those who arc mildly or moderately disabled, and with the assistance of therapy therapy could potentially go on lo live independent lives", said Ambler. Since October 1997, the $615,000 has been flowing to Grandview through a fee for service arrangement with DATC. These funds have been used to provide therapy and social work services services to children who were already on Grandview's caseload or waiting list. DATC has now decided to tender children's services together with services for adults. This year, Grandview Children's Centre, has served over 2400 children and their families in Durham Region with an annual budget of $1,472,600. The main facility facility is in Oshawa, with offices in Ajax and Port Perry. MATURE CHALLENGING 18 HOLE GOLF COURSE JOIN WITH A MEMBERSHIP NOW!
