The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, December 5,1998 Pace 4 Statesman Toros Compete In Pickering Tournament The weekend of November 26-29 saw the Canadian Statesman Toros participate in the Pickering AA Tournament. In round robin play, the Toros defeated Hamilton 5-1, Aurora Tigers 4-3 and tied the Toronto Colts 0-0 to win their division and advance to the semi-finals against Pickering. The Toros came out flying flying against the Panthers with Wade Pickell opening the scoring after a fine pass from Luke Pithcr. The two teams played an even second frame with no scoring, but the third period period saw the Toros open up and cruise to a 5-0 victory. Scoring in the third were Brandon Castellan with two goals, assists on both ' goals going to Mitch Callieu and Denver Brown. Mike Berney, with ■ a single on a wicked shot from the point and Robert O'Shea with another fine point shot set up by Pithcr, also scored. The finals saw the Toros meet the Aurora Tigers. The Toros jumped to a quick 1-0 lead as Pickell set up Brock Murphy in the slot for a picture perfect goal. But the Tigers came,back to tie the score before the end of the period. In the second, Brandon Ernst finished off a three way passing play with Zak Snowden and Kurds Allen to move the Toros ahead again. But seconds later, the Aurora squad was back with the tying goal. In the third period, the Toros ran into penalty problems and saw the Tigers pop two powerplay goals to move into a commanding 4-2 lead that the boys were unable to overcome in this game. Congratulations on your fine effort. Point getters in the tournament were as follows: follows: Pithcr 3 goals, 5 assists; Castellan and Dan McCarthy with 3 goals and 1 assist; Allen, Carl Andrews, Murphy, Ernst, Berney and Pickell with a goal and assist each; O'Shea 1 goal; Brown and Callieu 2 assists each; and Snowden, David Miller and Allen Dillon with single single assists. The Toros were backed by the exceptional goal- tending duo of Jory Fuller and Scott Junkin. Earlier in the week, the Toros added another victory victory to their regular season record as they defeated Belleville by a score of 2- 0 with Luke Pithcr scoring both goals. The Toros record now stands at 12 wins and 2 losses. Mackie's Automotive Impressive in League Play On Wednesday, November 18, Mackie's Automotive travelled to the home of the Pickering Panthers. After building a 3-0 lead after two periods, the Toros blew the match open in the third peppering Novice Selects Battle Richmond CRHL Peewee Selects Fail To Cash in On Chances When you don't make good on your advantages, you pay the price. The Selects had a man advantage advantage for five minutes, early in the first period, but could not mount much of an attack to get the first goal. However Markham, on only two shots in the first period, scored on their first shot on the net to lead 1-0 after one period. The second period was an evenly played period with Clarington tying it up on a three way passing play from Matt Cappuccitti to Jason Emond, behind the net, who then found Bryan Mercer open in front of the -net, to beat a sprawling Markham goalie. Markham, then responded with a goal of their own late in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Clarington pressed for the tying goal, with some good chances on two power play advantages advantages in the third, but could not capitalize. Markham found the net late in the third to make a final score of 3-1. In exhibition action, the Selects played to a 1-1 tie with Peterborough. The second period provided all the scoring in the game. Clarington drew first blood as Scott Parsons roofed a backhand shot past the Peterborough goalie. Peterborough tied it up later in the period. Clarington outshot Peterborough 13-6 in the third period but came up empty on the scoreboard and settled for a 1-1 tie. A quirk in the York Simcoc schedule saw the Clarington Novice Selects, sponsored by Alan Clark Trophies Ltd., face the Richmond Hill Stars three times in the first five games of the season. The first meeting resulted in a 3-0 victory for Richmond Hill. The rematch, also played in Richmond Hill, ended in a 3-2 decision also won by the home squad. Game highlights saw Brandon Couto stake Clarington to an early one goal lead. The play was sparked by the aggressive forechecking of Allysha Chapman. The Stars stormed back with three unanswered goals. Clarington's Aaron Pierce drew the Selects back to within one as he unleashed a howitzer that found the back of the net. The Novices pulled their goalie pressing for the equalizer, but fell just short. Richmond Hill made the trek eastward, looking for a sweep in the three game series. Coach Taylor had his troops firing on all cylinders as they exploded for three goals in the open ing period. Brandon Couto turned on the jets as he capitalized on a pair of breakaway opportunities. Picking up an assist on one of Couto's efforts was lincmate Allysha Chapman. Joey Janvcaux's rocket capped off the first period fireworks fireworks as he teamed up with Mark Wroblcwski for the game's third goal. The physical and aggressive play by the defensive corps of Dean Laflamme, Johnny Marano, Matt Vandermcer, Richard Hornby, Matthew McRae, Matt Sankey and Aaron Kolodziejczak was able to keep the high-powered Richmond Hill offence silent until the middle stages of the final period when they busted loose for a pair of goals just over a minute apart. Clarington held on for a thrilling 3-2 victory. Goaltender Matt Coe turned in a sparkling performance performance as he made a number of unbelievable saves. Cory Prince netted four goals for Mackies. Mike Schrider, in goal, turned away 16 Panther shots, a couple of them quite spectacular when the Toros potent offense forgot to play defense. Also scoring scoring were Adam Dcrks with an assist by Danny Morrison, and Kyle Goodchild with assists to Chris Jukic and Chris Marchant. Drawing assists on Cory's four goals were Jason Cadwell (2), Nick Bonin (2), with singles going to Jeff Ward and Brian Allore. The following Saturday, Mackie's Automotive travelled to Peterborough for a rematch against the Nationals. This was to be an important test for the Toros as it was Peterborough who were responsible for handing the Toros their only loss to date in league play. Kyle Goodchild with two, and Chris Jukic scored in the well deserved 3-1 victory. Nick Bonin, Mitch McMichael, Tim Lew, and Haley VanSeggclen collected collected assists. Goaltender Chad Deighton held off the Peterborough attack allowing Clarington to claim the win. On Sunday, November 22, the Barrie Flyers were in town. Trailing 2-0, David Ross found the net in the second period with an assist to Haley VanSeggclen. The third period belonged to the Toros. While Mike Schrider held Barrie off the scoreshcct, Mackie's Automotive managed to find the net three more times. Chris Jukic started things off in the third by scoring his second goal in as many games, assisted by David Ross and David Connelly. The next two Toros scores went to Cory Prince, who has been on a quite a tear lately. Helping Cory were Nick Bonin, Adam Dcrks, and Brian Allore.
