,i The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, September 17, 1997 Page 9 Letters to the Editor Provincial Cutbacks Will Mean Higher Municipal Taxes Dear Editor, I have just read in your newspaper the weekly column column from the loeal MPP, and I am left to wonder if in fact this man is living on the same planet as the rest of us. In one portion of Ins column lie says, "In the pending municipal elections this year, who pays and who delivers which services will naturally naturally be an opportunity to blame our Provincial Government for downloading." downloading." I ask you, is this guy for real? Durham Regional Finance Commissioner Jim Clapp reported to Durham Regional Council recently, that the Provincial Government's downloading and pooling plans arc estimated to cost taxpayers in Durham an increase in property taxes ranging from $224 and upwards. Mr. Clapp also told council that the financial financial impact of the elimination elimination of grants to municipalities municipalities and libraries, and the passing on responsibility responsibility of provincial highways will have a financial impact on the Region of Durham of between $35.3 million and $38.5 million. The MPP concludes his article by telling us that since his government is reducing taxes and spending spending we should be asking our municipal politicians to do the same. Let me tell Mr. O'Toole that from my own knowledge of our local council and our regional council too, no group of people works harder in keeping costs in line, and prevent tax increases as best they can, than they all do. What on earth are the councils to do in order to come to grips with a downloading bill estimated at the moment to approach $40 million? Let me remind people, this nonsense is coming from the same person who prior to his election promised there would be no user fees for drugs for seniors. Who also promised that health care would not be cut. Who also promised that education education would not be cut. Cord Mills What A Fair! Yes, the 145th annual Durham Central Fair held in Orono, September 4th, through September 7th was a huge success. This event that was attended by many people from near and far didn't just happen. It took special skills, talents, commitment and plain old-lashioncd hard work by many citizens to organize and ensure that events over the four days were on schedule and conducted conducted in a safe manner. Something for every age is important and to always remember the real traditional traditional purpose of holding an agricultural fair must be uppermost in the minds of the various committees as they prepare for each fair. The committee and many volunteers under the outstanding leadership of Ron Locke who was assisted by past fair presidents presidents including the 1996 President Bill Tomlinson did "The Village With A Difference" proud, Peter Maartcnsc was also present present to assist and help in any capacity. As a former Clarke Township farm boy, I was again impressed this year with the fine display of livestock, poultry and rabbits rabbits exhibited. The tractor display always brings back fond memories. On Thursday evening, it was fun participating in the Media/Politician's Challenge Milking Contest. As a result of milking my family's share of cows by hand as a farm boy, 1 still fortunately retained the knaek of milking even if only with the use of one hand. Being a candidate for local Ward 4 Council come November I Oth, it was great being a part of the contest and as winners we received terrific #1 T- shirts. The other team members were John Mutton, Cecil Mackcscy and Steven Cook. Durham Central Fair will continue to provide a great weekend for generations generations to come as long as we have dedicated volunteers volunteers like those who helped make past fairs as well as the 1997 fair such a success. Charlie Trim Beer Bottle Drive Will Help Diabetics I am writing this letter to introduce myself to your readers and to encourage them to support a worthwhile event that will be taking place in their community in a few weeks. My name is Jim Kennedy and I have diabetes. diabetes. I am also a Beer Store employee. Later this month, I will be participating in the annual fundraising bottle drive, entitled "A Case for a Cure", hosted by The Beer Store for the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA). The bottle drive will be held on Saturday, September 27 with every Beer Store across Ontario collecting empty beer bottles and cans donated for this important cause. %It was shortly after I was diagnosed with diabetes diabetes that I began my quest to learn as much as I could about the disease that is estimated to affect more than 100 million people by the year 2,000. That's when I joined CDA. To my delight, I found that the Association was an invaluable resource. The Association provides individuals with advice from doctors specializing specializing in diabetes. It conducts research and is up to dale about new improvements being made in the fight to control the disease and to one day find a cure. By participating in the "Case for a Cure" bottle drive, you will be helping to protect the environment. environment. Those 2 million beer bottles and cans collected collected and donated will be reused and refilled. At The Beer Store we estimate that we have diverted more than 60 billion beer bottles away from landfill sites over the past 70 years - enough to stretch to the moon and back 13 times. I urge local residents to drop by their local Beer Store on September 27 and to donate a case or two of beer empties to help us in our "Case for a Cure" campaign. Jim Kennedy Unanswered Question in Business Proposal After reading the story in the local papers of a proposal by Paula Lishman to move her fur- manufacturing business to Clarington, there was one issue that didn't appear to be addressed. Following the Orono area residents' concerns of putting industries on agricultural agricultural land with possible environmental damage and increase traffic on rural roads, Bill Lishman stressed the plan would be in keeping with the couple's couple's commitment to the environment. This includes the building of an 'earth-friendly architecture' architecture' on the site of an old gravel pit. The void in the coverage coverage of this story, however, is the initial procedure before the tanning and dyeing of the beaver pelts prior to arriving at the Lishmans who process them into fur knitted garments. garments. Have the Lishmans' pelt supplier in South Carolina implemented any sustainable initiatives to replace these animals?
