Kings are proud to select Scott Barney of the Peterborough Petes." Those words were uttered when Los Angeles Kings GM Dave Taylor chose Courtice's Barney in the second round (29lh overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft in Pittsburg on Saturday, June 21. "It's a great honor to be picked", Barney told The Statesman recently. "I was rated number 32, so to be picked higher than that is great." It was even more special for the draft to be in Pittsburgh because the Pittsburgh Pcnquins arc his favorite team, but that might have to change now. Draft day was a nervous on the back, from the Kings. He has played the past two seasons with the OHL's Peterborough Petes, including the 1996 Memorial Cup season season in which the Petes hosted. "That was so incredible, the fans were behind us all the way. It was too bad we couldn't couldn't have won it for them," he added. Now that the Kings have drafted Barney, they have two years to sign him. If the Kings arc unable to sign Barney in the next two years, he can reenter reenter the draft, but he doesn't want to have to do that. He plans on playing with the Petes for the next two seasons, seasons, but he said things could change. Barney said with his big NHL BOUND - Courtice's Scott Barney will be off to the training camp of the Los Angeles Kings this fall. He was selected in the second round, 29th overall, at the NHL Entry Draft that was held in Pittsburgh. He has been a member of the OHL's Peterborough Petes for the last two years. one for Barney and his family as they were at the draft in Pittsburgh. "I was rated number 32, so to be picked higher than that is.great." "I was so nervous. It was a nerve-wracking day for the whole family, but it was incredible to hear my name called," the 18-ycar-old said. "I just have to work harder now." Barney received a black- and-silvcr road jersey with his name on it and the number 97 Green Gaels Pound Orillia The Clarington Green Gaels have hit the home stretch of their 1997 regular season and they began it with a huge home floor win. The Green Gaels hosted the Orillia Kings on Monday night and dominated in a 12-5 win. The victory raised their record to 14-5 in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B league. It was only the third loss of the season for Orillia. Two of those losses have come at the hands of the Green Gaels. The Gaels beat the Kings 10-8 in Orillia back in late-May. Jaret Bilich (three goals, one assist), Duke McNutt (two goals, four assists), Stefan Hewak (two goals, three assists), Rob Fodor (two goals, three assists), Brad Cann (two goals, one assist), and Brad Reed (one goal, two assists), led the Gaels to the sweep of Orillia. "We had everything going for us tonight. We could sec our guys were up for tonight's game," Gaels head coach Terry Rowland said. "I've never seen them play better. We really made the ball dance tonight." Green Gaels manager Dieter Kirner was equally impressed with his team's outing. "The team is peaking at the right time. We've never played this well," he said. The Gaels travel to Brantford this Friday, before heading home on Saturday to play Scarborough to close out the regular season. Game time at the Recreation Complex is 8:00 p.m. At the league all-star game on Saturday, June 28, goalie Ray Dance, Jaret Bilich, and Rob Fodor represented the Green Gaels on the eastern team. Bilich and Fodor collected eight points apiece in a 28-11 victory. size and hard shot he thinks he can take his game to the professional level and be a productive pro player. He has also been invited to Canada's national junior team tryout camp. The camp runs from August 8-15 in North York and Barney would love the honor to play for the national junior team. Canada is going for its sixth consecutive consecutive gold medal at the World Championships. No "Aloha" For Triathlete by Jennifer Herr Staff Writer Frank Webster came within four minutes of Hawaii on June 22. The Courtice triathletc missed the cut for the Hawaiian Ironman at a qualifier qualifier in Muskoka, and will now set his sights on September's World Long Course Duathlon Championships in Spain. He qualified for that race by winning his age group category category at the Midland Walwyn Great Lakes Multi-Sport Series provincial champi onships held at Cedar Park in Clarington in May. Webster's three hour and seven minute finish at the Muskoka race would have been enough to qualify him for the Ironman last year, but strong competition meant that this year, it just wasn't enough. "It was more competitive than the provincials or the Canadians," says a disap pointed Webster. The Muskoka course consisted of a two kilometre swim, a 55 kilometre bike and a 15 kilometre run. 1997 BLAZER "Consumer s Digest Best Buy " $399* 36 months/$2,675 down Equipped with 4 wheel ABS, driver side air bag, 4.3 litre V6 engine, automatic transmission with overdrive, electronic transfer case, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo cassette. 1997 VENTURE "Automotive Journalists Association of Canada, New Van of The Year" $279* 36 months/$ 1,800 down Equipped with 4 wheel ABS, dual air bags, 3.4 litre V6 engine, 4 speed automatic electronic transmission, child safety locks, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo, battery run-down protection, tinted windows, tilt steering.
