The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Julv 2, 1997 Pace 5 Report from Queen's Pork -- ReCGIlt GroduCltQS ■ by John O'Toole Legislature Closes for Summer On Friday, June 27, at 1:30 a.m„ I arrived home from my work at the Ontario Legislature. The House has adjourned lor the summer, I hope. Let me explain this. This past week, we were eontinuing the 3rd day of debate on changes to the Standing Orders. Let me assure you that is a lot of talking (9 hrs.) from approximately 3:00 p.m. to midnight. midnight. We were supposed to be complete on the mlc changes, except that there was a trick played to delay the proceedings. All three parties use these tactics to delay the government's agenda agenda and that is fair according to the rules. However, as we adjourned at Thursday midnight, it looked as though the House will be called back some time in July. This debate is all about making the Ontario Legislature more efficient. The Standing Order changes proposed arc almost identical to the rules used in Ottawa. All three parties will have to abide by the rules, so I personally don't sec why all the fuss. Both of the last two governments, governments, Liberal and NDP, made mlc changes but somehow they arc different. Having worked in industry for over 30 years, I think we should make more effective use of our time, while at the same time respecting the rules of debate in a democratic country. Why not have the same rules in the Ontario Legislature as they have in our nation's capital? Our summer schedule is as follows. 1 will be taking three weeks vacation. My wife and I will be travelling to Halifax, Nova Scotia to visit our son who is serving in the Canadian Armed Forces at Shearwater. We will also be visiting London, Windsor and St. Catharines to establish residences for our three children for their university next year. Your constituency office will be closed front July 28th to August 11 th. We will continue to respond to our daily messages left on our answering machine. I will be back to Queen's Park in the last week of July and all of August to travel the province on committee work. The House is officially adjourned until August 18th. My reports to the newspaper newspaper will be much more brief and perhaps not weekly. However, I will be in daily contact with my office and will release information information as it becomes available. July 1, 1997, we celebrate Canada's 130th birthday. This may evoke an impression of a country with a long history. However, in terms of nations and history, we arc a very young country. We, as a country, have a proud history, a valued present and a future with challenges and hopes. I hope everyone joins in and celebrates this beautiful Covenant Reformed (Presbyterian) Church (RPCGA) located at Knox Christian School, Old Scugog Rd. Soya contains "isoflavones" which could have beneficial effects In preventing prostate and breast cancer, osteoporosis and menopausal "hot flashes". Trying this protein (In soya milk or tofu) might help but certainly can't do any harm. Elderly people sometimes have trouble drinking liquids through a straw.
