Richards Staff Wfilet Fast, fun and educational is how a St. Stephen's Secondary School teacher sees good computers and Internet access. Kiley McDaniel, the school's Site Administrator and Assistant Head of Computers/Busi ness, told The Canadian Statesman, the school has just completed its first year of cross-curriculum usage of the new computer lab. The lab, with over a dozen computers, has been used by many, if not all of the teachers, teachers, for a variety of subjects from math to language arts. English teacher Allan Blalazo noted his students used the Internet for a number of projects this past year and it was especially useful when studies focused on radio. 1 Demonstrating with a computer on Thursday morning, morning, Blalazo showed how easy it was to access information information that would have been much slower to obtain through more conventional ways like the mail. For Blalazo's students and himself, the computer - puts "the world on your screen." Laureen LeMoire, a math teacher at the school noted that the computers help "to reinforce the concepts I teach." And of course, "the students students love it when we come in." Jody Wytka said the lab has been set up so that each computer would have access to the Internet. This improves the chances of students accessing and using the Internet for research. Sandra Connolly said with the courses she teaches: math and science, the computers allowed for research, and learning about spread sheets, and mathematical concepts. McDaniel noted the school has been on the net for the past three years, but only this past year, were all the computers computers given access to the Internet. Currently, the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Separate School Board uses IBM computers and have formed a partnership with Bell and Cisco. He added he has heard rumours that this is one of the pieces of infrastructure the boards have put on the table to discuss sharing. As McDaniel put it, "what we have now, is second to none in the Durham Region." .And while some folks may think this is just part of the school's getting ready for a new school next fall, the idea of integrating the computers into all aspects of the curriculum curriculum has been a part of the separate school board's intention intention for the past three years. This year was just the proof of the pudding especially especially when one considers the school has its own web site thanks to students Matt Gagliardi who set up a virtual school and Mike Vardy who set up the web page. McDaniel says it is the board's intention to first connect connect the elementary and high schools and then the world...via the Internet, of course. Sandra Connolly, Laureen LeMoire and Jody Wytka were among a number of teachers at St. Stephen's Secondary School participating in a computer workshop on Thursday, June 26 at the school. They noted that the students at the school had benefited benefited from using the computers at the school during the first year of cross-cirriculum usage. M.J.
