Hernias QUESTION: I have an abdominal hernia hernia and my doctor says I need an operation, but I am not scheduled to see the surgeon surgeon until next month. I am in a lot of pain. I can't drive or sit. I am really uncomfortable. uncomfortable. How can you help? An abdominal hernia is a bulging of a loop of the intestine through an abdominal opening. From a physiotherapy perspective, perspective, what I found is that the, hernias hernias that cause pain have two or more muscles pulling and creating tension in the abdominal abdominal area. That tension contributes contributes significantly to the pain. When someone comes to me with a hernia, there are two things I do. I examine the client to see how far the hernia has protruded or bulged and always advise the client to see his doctor doctor if he has not already done so. Once a hernia has protruded protruded too far it may definitely need an operation. It is not something to take lightly. . Once the client has seen his medical doctor I then check for the trigger (tender) points in the muscles. The common places for these tender points are the outside ankle, the inner knee and the armpit on the same side as the hernia. The outside ankle muscle is called the peroneous, the inner knee muscle is the vastus medialus and the muscle under the arm- pit is the latissimus dorsi. These are usually the three muscles that are affected when a hernia is present. When these three muscles are treated with acupuncture, one finds the patient has much less pain in the hernia with sitting and driving, driving, etc. It helps to keep the patient comfortable until the operation. Follow up includes, teaching the patient how to bring in the abdominal muscles to support the hernia and to strengthen the back muscles to also help support the hernia.. It is possible to obtain good relief from the discomfort of the hernia. This approach to hernias is looking for the causes of the patient's symptoms. In the case of a painful hernia, it is two to three muscles like the ones I have outlined above pulling on the hernia. One needs to keep in mind that as good as the symptomatic symptomatic relief is, once the hernia has protruded, it may definitely require surgery and physiotherapy physiotherapy in this case is for pain relief only. A patient may need to go ahead and still have the operation.
