Richards Staff Writer Durham Region councillors councillors have reaffirmed their opposition to the creation of a new agency to replace the Region's home care program and placement coordination service. Regional Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Robert Kyle, told councillors on Wednesday morning, March 12, the department received a letter last year saying that at the end of Marcb^ 1997, "home care funding would be terminated." In a report to councillors from Dr. Kyle, it is stated that the Joint Transition Committee is responsible for the indentification and management management of transitional issues with the existing Home Care Program and Placement Coordination Service from the current host agencies to the Durham Access to Care Board (DAC). Across Ontario these agencies will be referred to as Community Care Access Centres (CCAC). They should not be confused with non-profit agencies like Clarington's own Community Care which have a similar name. This five-member board is also to develop agreements between the Durham Access to Care Board with the Durham Region and Oshawa General Hospital. However, during the process earlier this year, all five members of the board resigned their positions. Health and Social Services Committee Chair, Whitby Mayor. Tom Edwards, told The Clarington/Courtice Independent the resignations were offered when the province decided it wanted a business plan from the group prior to the termination of services services from the Region. As far as Mayor Edwards knows, the DAC board members members are currently back at work. However, he said the Region has "offered to continue continue the services as it has in the past and continue to do so until the new body is in place." If that is to happen, the Region wants the province to continue financing the program program until the transfer takes place. A recommendation to regional councillors from the committee takes the situation . a step further. The committee, and now the councillors, want the staff of the Health & Social Services Department to submit submit a business plan for "governing, "governing, managing, and admin istering Durham's CCAC for the consideration of the province." » Help Save The Environment and SAVE PLASTIC NEWSPAPER SLEEVES Bring in 200 plastic Newspaper Sleeves from your Clarington/Courtice Independent, and you can place a classified advertisement ,.,1/2 Price Value up to $20.00.
