GROUP By Glenn Trider It's time to change your furnace! What options do you have? First of all there are usually two reasons reasons that people consider changing their' heating system in their house. The first reason is for safely. When a gas or oil furnace is serviced the heat exchanger should be checked. The heat exchanger on one side carries the flue gas from burning the gas or oil. The secondary side absorbs this heat and transfers it to the air stream being pumped through the furnace ductwork by the furnace fan. When a heat exchanger fails it is due to a crack near welds or thermal stress causes a failure along the surface of the heat exchanger. Corrosion due to dampness dampness or leaky humidifiers can accelerate the process. When a technician determines determines that it is cracked it must be replaced immediately. Carbon monoxide gas will leak into the air stream causing very severe health effects. It is a good idea for every home to have one of these detectors. In most cases unless the furnace furnace is a recent model the whole unit is usually changed. The second reason is due to economics. economics. When a furnace gets near the end of its useful age the cost to repair both becomes higher and more frequent. By going to a more efficient model with a 5 year warranty, the new model will give the owner trouble free low cost service service for some time, and lower energy costs as a benefit. If you are in the market for a new furnace do you go with a mid or high efficiency model? This really depends on the size of the house, the insulations, windows and general age. The older the house generally the more costly it is to heat hence a high efficiency unit can make for substantial savings. On the other hand if it is a smaller bungalow and the heating costs seem reasonable then a mid efficiency unit makes more sense since it is less costly and the fuel savings will be very small between the mid and high efficiency model. If you are on oil and are in an urban area, then consider switching to natural gas if it is available. The cost savings can be significant in most cases. If gas is not available try to pick the most efficient oil fired unit you can afford and make sure your dealer can service it and take combustion efficiency efficiency measurements to ensure it is operating operating at peak efficiency. Newer oil furnaces furnaces require several instruments to set up properly. If you have a gas furnace and it is near the end of its useful life (25 - 30 years) you may finance or buy a new furnace. An authorized Consumer Gas dealer is your best choice to call. A new option is to rent your new furnace from Consumers Gas. This avoids the high capital outlay of a new furnace and maintenance and servicing is covered in the rental rate. An authorized authorized Consumers Gas dealer is the only qualified source to install and service these furnaces under this new option. You may contact me for more info if desired. Whatever fuel you do go with, pick a reputable dealer and one that gives you the most value and service for your heating dollars. From the Comfort Zone Mailbag: Question: Our drum type humidifier humidifier runs even when the furnace is not running and in the summer. Is this right? Susan, Bowmanville Susan, Answer: Normally these humidifiers humidifiers are powered only when the furnace fan is operating. This is the only time it can humidify the air as it requires warm air to travel through the drum to evaporate evaporate the water. My bet is the low voltage transformer transformer is connected to a voltage source that is powered even when the furnace is off. It should be connected to the furnace fan circuit. Make sure the humidstat is set to "off' in the summer and drain and clean the unit. It will then be ready in the fall for another season!
