After losing 2-0, the team won its next four games to capture the championship. Strong two-way hockey from all 15 players resulted resulted in winning. Ottawa were crowned champions after posting a 5-1 victory in the cham pionship game January 24-26 saw the Canadian Statesman Clarington Toros travel to Newmarket to compete in the North American Silver Stick Championships. They also defeated Millbrook in the opening game and a Tier II girls' team from Peterborough in the second game. The Statesman opened with a tenacious checking game that allowed only one shot on goal in a 9-0 win over Millbrook. In game two, behind the • shutout goaltending of Adam Jukes and Gordon Tapp, they defeated a Peterborough Tier 2 girls' team 5-0. The girls' team proved to be the strongest opposition of the tournament as they never stopped skating till the final buzzer was blown. The Statesman captured the 'A' Championship by out hustling hustling the host team Douro by the margin of 6-1. Tournament scoring was shared by Kyle MacKenzie (7g, 4a), Shawn Hughes (3g, 4a), Daniel Payne (3g, 2a), Gord Baird (5a), Trevor Richtler (2g, 2a), Chantelle Roussy (lg, 3a), Curtis Snoddon (2g, la), Brandon Sands (3a), Brad Gray (3a), Jay Sabiston (3a), Matthew Cappuccitti (lg, la), Chris Kerr (2a). Off to Nationals Sommer West and her North York Aeros will be making another trip to the Canadian Women's hockey champi- But it wasn't easy. North York trailed Newtonbrook 1-0 with 27 seconds left in the championship game of the provincial tournament tournament held this past weekend in Cobourg. A late goal, and another in overtime, qualified North York for the Canadian championships in Vancouver from March 6-10. It was the fourth win of the tournament for the Aeros, who had little trouble advancing through to the championship championship game. In the round robin, the Aeros, who were the first overall seed heading into the provincial tournament, defeated Peterborough 7-1, and Mississauga 6-1. In the semi-final, the Aeros shutout Scarborough 7-0, while Newtonbrook beat Mississauga 3-2, in overtime, to set up the championship showdown. West had a productive tournament offensively, scoring four times while adding three assists. It will be the second year in a row that the North York Aeros have represented Ontario at the Canadian championships,. championships,. Last year, the Aeros advanced to the gold medal game, but lost a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Quebec. The Aeros currently sit in first place in the Central Ontario Women's League standings with an impressive regular season record of 24-1-6, scoring 216 goals and allowing a paltry 36 in 31 games. the strong skating and powerful team from Ottawa. The Toros started with two round-robin games on Friday against Milton and Sudbury. Milton had defeated them two weeks prior in another tournament tournament and Sudbury had not lost a hockey game all season. The Toros showed that they came scored in a 5-2 loss to Newmarket. In the semi-finals the opponents were a familiar foe, the Aurora Tigers.
