On Tuesday morning, February 4, 1997, at eight o'clock at Massey House Restaurant, about fifteen interested citizens citizens met to discuss the value of a Village of Newcastle Ratepayers' Association. These persons decided that it would be beneficial to the lifestyle of the people of the area and began the non-partisan organizational process. On Thursday, January 30th, the McCullough families celebrated their father Irv's 80th birthday when they had a dinner party at the Oshawa Golf and Country Club. With Irv and wife Audrey on this happy occasion were sons and wives, Dave and Marg of Oshawa, Paul and Myrna of Gilmour, Gary and Jeannie of Oshawa, Peter and Linda of. On Saturday tour guide Gloria Gordon' escorted a busload busload of Newcastle and Bowmanville seniors to Lindsay where dinner was enjoyed prior to the Tommy Hunter Show at the Academy Theatre. Sunday supper guests of Elizabeth Skelding were Bill and Mary Skelding, of Newtonville and Mr. Raymond Chapman. Mr. Harry Wade took Warren and Marg Tail out for dinner on Sunday. With Mr. and Mrs. Doug Rowe and Barry, Bowmanville, on Sunday were Annette and Doug Nugent and Jenna, Myrtle Alldred, Bruce Alldred of Port Hope, and his daughter Erin, and Donna Bannister. The family _ celebrated Barry's birthday. On Saturday Chris Call, of Oshawa, celebrated his birthday with his grandmother Hilda Call. On Sunday Mrs. Hilda Call enjoyed supper with Cory and Marilyn Call, Ashley and Morgan, Blackstock. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hoogkamp were in Toronto on Sunday helping helping son Jim celebrate his birthday. birthday. Mrs. Vicki Gray was a Sunday overnight guest of George and Diane Gray, Stephen and Michael, of Whitby. All former guides, scouts, etc. are invited to the Thinking Day Service on February 23rd at 2 p.m. at St. George's Anglican Church. The Guides have been calling getting their orders for cookies. On Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs. Terry Graham, Mr. and Mrs. Brenton Rickard and Mr. and Mrs. Murray Paterson attended the 45th anniversary of Norwood Lions Club. Historical Meeting On Monday evening, February 3rd, 1997, the annual general meeting of the Newcastle Village and District Historical Society attracted a capacity crowd to the Memorial Library Room of the Newcastle Community Hall. Vice-President Ken Stephenson chaired the meeting. Judge Jack Cannon, a member member from Toronto, was welcomed as were all in attendance. The 1996 annual report was given by President Herb Taylor, who reviewed the year's programme and thanked all for their constant support. Treasurer Francis Jose distributed distributed copies and explained the 1996 financial report. Archivist Pat Macdonnell spoke of the recent contributions to the museum. Changes in bylaws bylaws were passed. Mrs. Pippa Sclmiiegelow presented presented the nominating committee committee report which was accepted. Show and Tell time was most interesting with various articles produced. Some of these included: included: alms bowl, old eye glasses, photo album, tea pot with a rigid handle on top, Wallbridge genealogy book, an old Bible, mourning ring, gout stool, 100- year old toy dog, Russian samovar, valentines, research papers, copy books, silver angel spoons from Holland and a 1922 picture of Miss Mason's classroom classroom at Newcastle Public School. For his wonderful newsletters and great historical research, President Herb Taylor was presented with a gift and accompanying speech by Farncomb Le Gresley, Refreshments during a social time were enjoyed. News from St. George's On this fifth Sunday of Epiphany, February 9th, the service of morning prayer had the subject of Lenten observance observance as its theme. At the beginning of the service the children helped hand out the coin boxes and folders for the Lent offering. Flowers at the altar were given by Albert and Lois Maxwell in memory of their parents. The prayers and sympathy of the congregation are extended to Cathie Moulton and her family on the death of her father. A Mardi Gras Pancake Breakfast was served by the men of the parish after the service. Many people of all ages enjoyed the food and fellowship, and the proceeds raised by the event will go to parish outreach. After the delicious feast, the Reverend Ann Tottenham and a group of parishioners joined the residents residents of the Newcastle Health Care Centre for their Sunday service at 1:30 p.m. The Ash Wednesday service will take place at St. George's on February 12th at 7 p.m. On Wednesday mornings during Lent, beginning on February 19th, there will be a service of holy communion at 8:30 a.m. United Church On Thursday the Trillium Unit met at the home of Grace Rudell. The proposed proposed budget for '97 was accepted. Upcoming dates are February 26th Oshawa Presbyterial at Hampton, May 4th UCW Sunday, October 18 Golden Harvest Craft and Bake Sale and November 1st Turkey Supper. After the business a social time and lunch were enjoyed. On Sunday, February 9th, prior to Sunday worship, pancake breakfast was enjoyed. Good to see Wally and Inez Boughen there. Rick Armishaw was lay reader on Transfiguration Sunday. Roots and Wings (based on Mark 9: 2-9) was the title of Reverend Stiles' meditation. Friday, February 14 Cupid's Night Out sponsored by the Youth Club, 8 p.m. at the Sunday School Hall. Being Christian in the 21st Century a two-day retreat at Orono United Church takes place February 28 - March 1st. The death of Allan Down was announced. We extend sympathy. The choir sang, and Reverend Sedgwick read the second lesson I Cor. 8: 1-13.
