Defrost as needed to optimize optimize appliance performance. Fast freezing creates smaller crystals and helps retain the natural colour and flavour of the food. Slow freezing, however, however, creates larger crystals in the food tissue. If cold air is leaking around an appliance, door, have the door adjusted or gasket replaced. MORTGAGES I Division Street Bowmanville By Glenn Trider Welcome to the Comfort Zone. As promised we will touch this week on how to calculate annual heating costs for some different fuels. Let us assume we have an average average home about 10 years old with an average heating load annually of 100 gigajoules. Our model home is about 2000 square feet. Energy Content and Local Prices Energy Content Fuel Price Fuel Oil 38.2 mj/L .40//L Nulurul Gas 37.5 mj/m' .21//m' Electricity...: ...3.6 mj/kwh 8.2v'/kwh Propane 25.3 mj/L .45//L Mixcd.llardwiiix! 25,(XX) mj/eurd S15()./cord Wood Pellets ! IV,XIX) mj/tun SMIVlon You will also have to figure out your average system efficiency as per table below. Pick the unit that best suits your system. Fuel Type of System Efficiency/ C.O.P. Oil • Conventional 70% • High EITieicncy 85% Electricity • Central Furnace/ Baseboard 11X1% Natural Gas • Med. Efficiency 80% • High Efficiency ' 95% Propane • Med. Efficiency.. 80% • High Efficiency 92% Wood • Central Furnace 55% ■ High Efficiency Stove 70% Wood Pellets • Pellet Stove 75% , Air Source ■ • Forced Air 1.8 Heal Pump Ground Source ; Forced Air 3.3 Heal Pump . The next step is. to determine annual heating costs with the following following formula: Energy Cosl/Unil x Healing Loan x HXi.lXX) Energy Content System Efficiency or C.O.P. 1 Our house has an annual heating load of 100 gigajoules which is average. Example 1: High Efficiency Oil .4IV/L x IIX) gigajoules x KX).(XX) 38.2 mj/iilrc 85% = $1176.47/year Example-2: High Efficiency Gas .21c l /nP x IflOctainulcs x l(X),(XX) 37.5 mj/m' 95% = $589.47/ year Example 3: Ground Source Heat Pump .082t!/kwh x 11X) gigajoules x HX).(XX) 3.6 mj/kwh 3.3xl(X) = % = $696.96 /year The three examples above can be changed to fit your particular set-up in your house. Generally speaking Natural Gas is the lowest Ground Source. Heat Pumps slightly slightly higher followed by Wood, Oil, Propane, then straight electric heating. Keep these examples for reference reference especially if you are considering considering a switch to another fuel. For people on electric heat the savings can be very high to switch to another fuel source! Your home will be cheaper to heat and more attractive to a future buyer by having a low cost source of heating in it. Copies of government publications publications on all fuels are available free of charge.
