Powell Auctions, Appraisals and Liquidations. Local home builders laid the foundation foundation for success with their first annual annual "Builders Blow-Out Yard Sal". The sale which raised over $4,000.00 for the United Way of Oshawa- Whilby-Claringlon was held on the last Sunday in November. Sale items consisted of doors, cabinets, windows, windows, fixtures, flooring, and other objects that were overstocked, scratched or wrong colour ordered objects. Because of the overwhelming overwhelming demand, builders arc already planning for a bigger sale next year. Credit for this success goes to Peggy Brown of the Mortgage Insurance Insurance Company of Canada (MICC) and United Way volunteer, who took the idea from blue-print to construction. construction. Peggy, who is the 1994 chairperson chairperson of the Builders' Developers section of the campaign, persuaded the Durham Home Builders' Association Association to embrace this original project. Stephen Kassingcr, President of the Oshawa-Durham Home Builders' Association was an enthusiastic participant participant in the event at the Kassingcr model home in Highland Gardens. "Wc decided to become involved with the project since the United Way provides help for a great diversity diversity of need. The Oshawa-Durham Home Builders' Association is committed committed to the community in more ways than one. Not only do wc build new communities, but support the citizens citizens of the Durham area through the United Way. Everyone benefits." The Kassingers, along with co-sponsors Millwork, New Way Plumbing and Parkwood Flooring helped raise $1,642.00, the biggest return of the day. Other participating builders included included Melody, City, Woodland, Vcl- tri and Durham Homes. Co-sponsors such as banks and local local hardware stores also contributed items as draw prizes and for sale. Other United Way volunteers Tony Slaven of the Sutton Group and Joan Myles and Marion Koeslag of the Bank of Montreal. The EDGE 94.9 FM Community Cruiser provided live broadcasts from each location throughout the day. This unique event brought several sectors of the business community together in a successful endeavour that is bound to be repeated. "It's important for our campaign to broaden its base in the business community", said Cindy Murray, Executive Director of the United Way of Oshawa-Whitby- Clarington. "In the 90's, fund raising must be imaginative and this group, along with the "Home Builders' Association, Association, has obviously found the formula formula for success .with their creative ideas". All money raised for the United Way of Oshawa-Whitby-Clarington remains in the community, supporting supporting more than 200 programs in over 40 non-profit agencies, from which over 80,000 residents receive direct benefit.
