10 The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, November 19,1994 Gerontologist Speaks to Female Caregivers at Nov. 19th Workshop A workshop offering female caregivers caregivers insights into dealing with stress, accessing community resources, resources, discovering inner strengths will be given on Saturday, Nov. 19 in Ajax. Pauline Garvey a gerontologist from Peterborough said she will be "giving practical down-to-earth suggestions" suggestions" for people to find their inner strengths. The workshop is geared to "individuals "individuals caring for a spouse or child." It is also geared to those who may or may not do this for a living. During the seminar, caregivers will be able to participate in small group sessions. Garvey looks at the caregiving from a feminist view point. She offers • "women new insights into how to cope as caregivers in the 1990s. Over the years, generation after after generation of women have functioned functioned as caregiver in the 1990's," states Scott Young, an organizer of the seminar. "Women usually have had no experience experience for the aging caregiver role nor have they had time to prepare for the stress they will experience." Garvey has designed a workshop for women who feel the need to escape escape the stress of caregiving by taking control and using the supports that can help them take care of their own needs. The upcoming seasonal holiday is always a stressful time for caregivers. Young notes, "studies show that it is increasingly difficult to cope with the many demands of being a caregiver caregiver during the festive season. This workshop is designed to reduce some of the stress in being a caregiver during during this important season of die year." To pre-register caregivers can call Young at 623-6870. The day-long workshop will start at 9 a.m. with "The hidden sources of support." Next at 1 p.m. will be "Your inner self and strengths to survive and next at 3 p.m. is "How to relax amidst the role of caregiving." People wanting to attend are asked to bring pen and paper, a bag lunch and a personal coffee mug. Clarke High School Hosts Academic Heptathlon An academic heptathlon competition including schools from Clarington, Cobourg, and Port Hope, was held at Clarke High School last week.
