IYlOlindlllE IS SC - Â PETER KOWAL Real Estate Limited Broker f If you're spending nearly 50 hours during the summer mowing your lawn, you should probably be ready to spend at least a few hours preparing preparing it for winter. To novice and experienced experienced gardeners, fall signals the end of the growing season and the best time to care for your garden and lawn before the snow flies. According to experts, taking time to prune, remove leaves, fertilize and protect your lawn and garden for the winter will help assure you of a healthy growing season season next spring. "Just as you would put on a coat and gloves during the winter, you should do the same for your lawn and garden," says Audrie Vanderwerf, a horticulture expert with The Home Depot, Canada's largest chain of home improvement warehouse stores. She offers the following advice advice to make your fall chores as painless painless as possible, and rewarding for next spring and summer. Rake, rake, rake! Or if the very idea of raking makes you want to cut down your trees to avoid raking, Vanderwerf suggest using a leaf blower and vacuum. Leaf blowers and vacuums allow you to blow the leave into a pile and vacuum them up without going near a rake. Leaf blowers blowers with extensions will even clean eaves for you. Whether you decide to use a rake or a-blower, Vanderwerf urges you to clear dead stems, leaves and debris from your lawn, garden and bushes or from around the base of trees. "Debris left until spring provide great hiding places for overwintering pests and diseases," says Vanderwerf. Instead of bagging valuable organic organic matter, you can use a mulchcr to produce shredded leaves and grass clippings that can be collected by a leaf vacuum and added to the compost compost pile or used to protect various plants in your garden. Before you store your lawnmower for the winter, it may be necessary to mow your lawn one last time, but don't cut the grass any lower than five centimetres. After cutting and clearing all leaves away, it's time to fertilize your lawn before winter. Vanderwerf recommends using a fertilizer fertilizer such as 6-8-15 with or without weedkiller, which contains a higher amount of potassium (potassium is the last of the three numbers). The higher potassium content will provide provide hardiness to grass and overall cell-health to withstand every rc- gions's winter. Always use a fertilizer fertilizer spreader to evenly distribute fertilizer fertilizer and to avoid dumping clumps of fertilizer that may do more harm than good. Pruning Fall is also a great time to prune summer flowering perennial plants, overgrown bushes, trees and roses. Pruning now will improve their growth in the spring. Although the general rule is to prune weaker branches to avoid them breaking under under the weight of snow - pruning is always better than breaking - Vander- wef cautions that not all plants and trees require the same amount of pruning. "If you're unfamiliar with pruning, pick-up a book or seek an expert's advice," says Vanderwerf. Most perennials require protection from winter to help them survive and keep them growing healthy in the spring. Recently planted evergreens that arc spending their first winter in your garden need to wear a burlap winter coat. Burlap is readily available available where you purchase your garden supplies. After the ground is frozen to a depth of 8 to 10 centimetres or after a continued cold spell, Vanderwerf recommends recommends placing a mulch of leaves or other such material - available at your garden supply store - around roses, fall mums and more tender perennial perennial plants. Although many people think that mulches arc used to keep the plants warm, they actually keep the soil temperatures as uniform as possible, reducing the danger of root breakage and other damage that results results from alternate freezing and thawing. Because most roses and tender bushes need winter protection, a number of barriers have been created to suit their particular needs. Vanderwerf Vanderwerf suggests using the following types: "rose cones" slip right over your pruned shrub; "mounding" is accomplished accomplished by surrounding the bud- union with about 30 centimetres of shredded materials, and a wire cage can be wrapped around a tied plant and filled with shredded leaves or newspapers. "Every bush is different," different," says Vanderwerf, "so make sure the type you decide to use matches the needs of your bushes." Now is also a good time to drain your garden pool. Don't neglect to clean the equipment and to make sure that necessary precautions arc taken for the winter. One advantage of preparing your lawn and garden for the winter is that you won't have to do it come spring, when there are other gardening things to do. "All that preparation and care really is worth it because you'll find your lawn and garden will reward you by being healthy and green. And best of all," says Vanderwerf, "before you know it, spring is here." 52 King St. W., Bowmanville Phone: (905) 623-2453 Fax: (905) 623-0136 SERVING HOW MA N VILLE A Nl) AREA SINCE 1955 The Little Office That's Big on Service YEAR ROUND HOME on Cordova Lake - minutes from Havelock and Marmora.
