This is the perfect time to take advantage advantage of season-end sales on equipment, equipment, to decide on the locations and variety of plants you'll want in the garden next year, and to do some late planting as well as the usual fall clean-up. "One way to cut long-term gardening gardening costs is by using energy- efficient equipment that can literally help your garden grow," says Marilyn Marilyn Gurevsky, a manager with the ministry's Consumer Affairs Branch. "For example, a mulching lawn mower, that returns clippings to the soil, can save a lot of money in fertilizer fertilizer costs and ' dispose of grass cuttings every time it's used." Also, those who don't compost, or have a composting site nearby can use clippings from a regular mower to help protect flower beds over the winter. She says that people who aren't inclined to spend a lot of money on gardening equipment in autumn can save a few dollars on the spades, spreaders and sprinklers shopkeepers want to get off the shelves before snowblower season starts. It's also a good time to look for many varieties of evergreens that may now be on sale and can be planted planted in the fall, as well as the usual spring-flower bulbs. Evergreens can be strategically planted to help cut household energy costs in winter. Consult a professional for advice on landscaping for energy conservation. Gurevsky reminds home gardeners gardeners that whether evergreens are newly planted or years old, they should be well watered at the roots before the ground freezes. "Fertilizer is a no-no after early autumn, but encouraging lots of water to be absorbed by ever- ... WE'RE MOVING! As well as buying plants and equipment, fall is a good time to plan next year's garden - you may not be able to remember what you liked about, that special flower bed after it's covered in three feet of snow. Take into account the nature of your soil. Many experts suggest soil condition condition can be improved by running the lawn mower over your leaves instead of raking them. Let some remain on the grass over the winter and using the remainder around the flower beds. Also, give some thought to longterm longterm cost savings in the garden. Landscaping with trees, bushes and perennials costs more to start with, but can save a lot of money in annual plants over a period of years. One of the biggest trends in horticulture horticulture is zero-scaping. This involves planting gardens that both boost environmental environmental protection and help people people who have limited time to spend caring for plants. Zero-scaped gardens gardens require no pruning, watering or other special care once they arc in place. Most of these projects arc accomplished accomplished by trained professionals. For advice on do-it-yourself projects projects most people learn to trust a reputable reputable nursery. But Gurevsky suggests suggests anyone who is seeking a good nursery should contact Landscape Ontario, a horticultural organization with members including garden centres, centres, landscape contractors, growers, planners and spray companies. Landscape Ontario, which works with government on such issues as pesticide controls and plant importation, importation, offers advice to consumers through a scries of brochures available available at most major garden centres. This association also offers to help consumers resolve disputes with members. The office may be reached by calling 905-875-1805. For sophisticated projects, landscape landscape architects may be called in. These professionals are generally in volved with complicated projects, such as parks and zoos, but some enjoy enjoy residential work. The Ontario Association Association of Landscape Architects will provide a directory of member firms, fee of charge, by calling 416- 443-1785. She would be uncomfortable taking a trip to kill time or escape or just be a tourist passively observing. Last year we went to Portugal in order to visit the wine country in northern Portugal and part of the agenda, as always, was to bring home something as a permanent, evocative reminder of that trip. Now Portugal has some wonderful crafts that have been practised down through the centuries - leather, lace, pottery, gold jewelry, and perhaps most notably, hand- painted tiles. As we drove through the north of Portugal we made many stops at small shops with hand-painted tiles and eventually we found a panel with just the right colors and the right overall dimension for our kitchen wall. The price was such that we wanted to bring them home packed carefully in our suitcases among our clothes rather than trust them to a shipping firm which would deliver them much later at considerable expense and perhaps damaged. If even one was damaged it would spoil the whole panel. We got them safely into the country and home without mishap, but it was months before we agreed as' to their location on the wall and until I had time to put them up. We finally decided they should go up a la Portuguese, directly onto the wall, just as they did, inside or outside the buildings. After stripping the wallpaper, I carefully laid out the exact dimensions of what would be the finished panel, including the mortar by Ben Bramble joints. I screwed a temporary support to the wall for the bottom row of tiles and laid on an adhesive base with a toothed trowel and placed the tiles into the . mortar bed. Spaces between the tiles were kept uniform by means of plastic spacers that allow us amateurs to do professional looking work. After tapping them firmly into the bed with a short piece of two by four and a hammer so all were dead level, I waited for the mortar to set and then applied the grout to the joints by using a firm rubber squeegee moving diagonally across the joints. After cleaning up the tile faces by removing the last of the grout, I carefully cut a mitred frame to finish off the panel. I removed the bottom support and screwed the frame to the wall using "trim head" drywall screws. They have tiny heads that leave a very small hole when they are driven beneath the wood surface. It is quite amazing that even though the tiles are originally laid out and painted as a panel with the tiles touching each other you can set them in mortar with a 1/4" grout joint between them and there is no distortion of the pattern. The panel is definitely the focal point in our kitchen and the only regret I have about the whole exercise is that I applied them directly to the wall rather than to a plywood panel which l could easily remove from the wall should we ever move. My next project is a small table that will support the beautiful circular piece of marble inlaid with semi precious stones that Linda brought back from India. I live in the fear she may one day take up big game hunting. | Sponsored by j Sfct Canadian ^ ta Usman j Your Community Newspaper Since 1854 | 62 King Street West 623-3303 Bowmanville CLIP AND SAVE r ÜW 9 < cornerstone realty ltd., realtor 104 king st. e., bowmanville RE/MAX experience gets results!
