WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24TH RED CROSS BLOOD DONOR CLINIC - The Red Cross will be conducting an additional clinic in Bowmanville in order to help ensure that there is an adequate supply of blood during the remaining weeks of summer. The clinic is being held today at the usual location in the Bowmanville Lions Centre. Hours are from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please give the gift of life. FRIDAY, AUGUST 26TH CANADIAN TIRE CAR WASH - The United Way of Oshawa-Whitby and Clarington will benefit from a car wash taking place at the Bowmanville Canadian Tire Parking Lot. This event will run from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. this Friday, August 26. There will be a suggested minimum donation of $3. Your contribution helps fund more than 200 programs from 43 local agencies directly benefitting 80,000 residents. DEMOLITION DERBY - The 129th annual Blackstock Fair gets under way with a Demolition Derby at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 26. The fair continues all day on Saturday, August 27th. SATURDAY, AUGUST 27TH BLACKSTOCK FAIR - You can enjoy a midway, livestock show, parade, 4-H displays, commercial exhibits and lots more at the 129th annual Blackstock Fair. Buildings open at 9 a.m., with an Official Opening around 11 a.m. Blackstock sculptor Bill Lishman (also known as "Father Goose") will formally open the fair. A highlight will be the performance by Graham and Eleanor Townsend, Canadian Fiddle Champions. There are lots of attractions for the children, including a mutt show and kiddies' pedal tractor pull. This year's edition of the Durham Central Agricultural Society fair will be held from September 8 to 11. It features the Imperial Hell Drivers, a demolition derby, fiddlers' contests, livestock shows, harness racing, antique cars, a pet show, talent contest, midway, commercial exhibitions, student art display and lots more. Passports good for all four days are available. "CRAFTY" PEOPLE WANTED - The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is looking for artisans interested in displaying or selling their work at the Authority's 6th annual Autumn Craft Show. It takes place on Sunday, September 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Enniskillen Conservation Area. If you knit, sew, paint, make stained glass windows or take part in any other artistic activity, this is the place to be. SPANISH CLASSES AVAILABLE - The Spanish Canadian Cultural Society will offer conversational and business Spanish programs for children and adults next month. The Spanish Heritage Language Programs will be offered from Kindergarten to grade eight. No Spanish background is required. Activities will include folklore, panata.crafts and bingo vocabulary games. Children's programs take place at Central Collegiate High School at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and on Saturday mornings at St. Christopher Catholic High School in Oshawa. Whitby classes run on Thursdays at Henry Street High School. These classes begin September 14, 15 and 17. To register for children's Spanish programs, call 579-2334. MUSEUM HOSTS ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW - The Bowmanville Museum will be holding its annual Outdoor Arts and Crafts Sale on Saturday, September 10th, It takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many different crafts will be represented. There will also be a book/rccord table and light refreshments. Admission to the museum will be free. The show takes place on die museum's lawn. BIG BROTHERS MONTH - September is Big Brothers Month in Clarington. There will be a flag-raising on Tuesday, September 6, to launch the celebrations. Other activities will include a kite festival, a children's pet show at (lie Orono Fair, a parking lot sale and a fund-raiser at Archibald Orchards. After a one-year absence, the run has been re-established, thanks to the efforts of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority who have volunteered to be sponsors. The fund-raiser for cancer research takes place on September 18th, with the start and finish line at Bowmanville's Memorial Park. The course is 10 kilometres. Of course, you don't have to run that distance. You can walk, cycle, roller-blade or use some other mode of transportation. The important thing is to raise funds for the Cancer Society. Terry Fox runs- across Canada and in a number of other countries have raised $135 million. FOR YOUR INFORMATION MUSEUM T-SHIRTS AVAILABLE - A limited-edition T-shirt depicting the old "Cream of Barley" cereal box cover in full color has been created. The shirts are a joint project by the Bowmanville Museum, Clarke Museum and Archives and the Visual Arts Centre. They are designed to raise awareness of these three main cultural facilities in Clarington. The Visual Arts Centre in Soper Creek Park, Bowmanville, is housed in the former Cream of Barley Mill. Shirts are available from the Visual Arts Centre or the two museums for $15. They are being sold as a fund-raising project. LEARN TO SAVE A LIFE -- A Red Cross First Aid Course will teach you the six emergency action principles to guide your first aid response in any emergency. Courses are available this summer in emergency first aid, standard first aid, or basic rescuer training. All courses include basic life-support, and one-person CPR. There will be classes for persons eight and under, 12 and under, 18 and under; 1949 and over 50 Three prizes will be awarded in each category. Any musical talent, including singing and playing an instrument, is welcome. The Mundell Family, who are presenting their show at the Durham Central Fair that day, will be on hand to supply any back-up required. The 142nd edition of the Durham Central Fair will run from September 8 to 11 in the Orono Fairgrounds, with entertainment for the whole family.
