4 The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, July 9,1994 Part-time Federal Employees Contributing to Pension Plan Police Chase Results in Charges Laid Against Four Young Offenders For the first time, part-time federal federal employees will be able to contribute contribute to the Public Service pension plan under new regulations which take effect effect July 4 this year. . • / c. \ f y-o - ^ c \ > I o C The regulations, which implement provisions in Public Service pension reform legislation, will permit more than 15, 000 part-time employees to contribute to and receive pensions if they work at least 12 hours a week. Under previous legislation, employees employees had to work at least 30 hours a week to qualify. "This initiative corrects an inequity inequity towards part-time employees, most of whom are women," said Treasury Board President Art Eggleton today. "The pension plan now accomodates accomodates more flexible working arrangements. arrangements. It reflects the government's commitment to fairness and equity." Under the new measures, the contributions contributions and benefits of part-time employees will be determined by comparing the number of hours a part-time employee works to those of a full-time employee. For instance, someone working 19 hours a week would contribute about half as much as an employee working a regular 37- 1/2 hour week. Pension benefits will be prorated in the same way. Part-time employees hired before July 4 this year will be able to choose whether they wish to be included under under the pension plan. Hamilton On Wednesday, July 6th, 1994 at approximately 3:15 a.m. the Esso Gas Station, 720 Taunton Road West, i Whitby was robbed by two youths with a shotgun. A stolen vehicle was seen leaving and this was pursued by Police East on Taunton Road, Oshawa. The vehicle then went North on Harmony Road, through Columbus, West to Thickson Rd., Whitby, North through Ashbum, then into Pnnce Albert and into Port Perry where it struck a Police Cruiser. The youths fled the scene but were caught a short distance away. As the result of an extensive investigation investigation by the Durham Regional Police Robbery Unit a total of 86 criminal charges have been laid against 4 youths. They are aged 15 years, two 16 years and a 17 year old. These charges include Robbery, Break & Enter, Possession of Stolen Property, Wearing a disguise with intent, intent, Theft over $1000, Mischief over $1000, Dangerous Driving, Using a firearm while committing an indicta ble offence, Breach of Undertaking and failing to remain at the scene of an accident. These youths are presently in custody custody awaiting an appearance before Oshawa Provincial Court. No names are being released under under the Youthful Offender Act.
