by Sher Leetooze The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, July 2,1994 5 Fun Times at Kinsmen Carnival BK H IjIMl Corporate Histories in Bowmanville Today, Bowmanville is the home of a number of corporate branches, has many small manufacturers, and retailers who are known for their excellence excellence for miles around. Customers of the local trade are found not only amdng our neighbours, but in all corners corners of the earth. It sounds as if Bowmanville is at its height in its development. But, believe believe it or not, Bowmanville's importance importance as a commercial and manufacturing manufacturing centre has had a decrease since its heyday in the early decades of this century. Most of the industry that abounded abounded in Bowmanville in those days are no longer with us, however, some of the buildings they occupied serve to remind us that they did indeed exist. Not a sign remains today, for instance, instance, of the Upper Canada Furniture Furniture Company, though there are residents residents who can remember it being there. It was located on Elgin Street just north of where the CPR tracks now cross, so say the researchers who put together 'A Retrospect', Bowmanville's centennial book. Scugog St. resident, Olive Hull remembers remembers the factory. She also remembers remembers a number of houses that used to sit right where the tracks are today. Those houses were moved to other locations, such as Odell St. and Prospect St., to make way for the tracks, a task she wonders how they achieved in those days, given the equipment there was to work with. In her own home, Olive has a number of pieces of furniture that were made in the Upper Canada factory. Bowmanville's Memorial Park now occupies the land where once operated a brickyard. Alsay and Thomas Fox were the owners and brick makers. This is what 'A Retrospect' Retrospect' has recorded about his business business ..."They turned out brick in large quantities as the demand was brisk at that time, and evidently did very well indeed. Alsay Fox, by the way, was a member (from the south ward) of the first municipal council of the Town of Bowmanville. After a few years both brothers left town and R. Hamley then carried on the brickyard brickyard in part of the area that the Fox Brothers had had, but as the clay suitable suitable for brick making began to run out here, he transferred the yard to the higher land on the north side of the Base Line just east of Soper's Creek. After his death his son, Henry Hamley, carried on this business for quite a lengthy period. For many years the lots in the south ward from - which the clay for brickmaking had been dug were quite conspicuous, as water generally lay in them during the wet seasons, and in the winter they were used for open air skating. Today, they "have been largely filled in and have houses upon them (with the exception, of course, of the lots which were converted into Memorial Park). Once a proud landmark in the town, the now absent Dominion Organ Organ and Piano Company building dominated the central area of the town. These were mostly of a small type, probably for use in schools. Dominion pianos and organs were shown not only at the Toronto Exhibition but at world fairs also ... (the author of this information remembered remembered being present at a preview held for interested townsfolk in the offices of the old factory, of the instruments instruments which were being sent to the Chicago World's Fair in 1893). Another early industry, short lived however, was the Novelty and Match Factory which opened about 1887. It was referred to, usually, as The Match Factory, and was located in a two storey brick building which used to stand at the comer of Albert and Brown Streets. The principal product of this company company was ... "a neat three-cylinder metal instrument of handy pocket size. The two outside cylinders were magazines into which special caps or pellets were inserted; the middle cylinder cylinder had a piston. To actuate it you drew a cap into this cylinder and then ignited it by a downward thrust on the piston." Apparently it did not catch on with the general public, who, it seems, preferred the standard sulphur variety matches, and the company appears appears to have gone out of business within a year or two. Having a bouncy good time at the Kinsmen Carnival on Sunday, June 26, was two-year-old Jessica Broad. She took time out to bounce, while her parents, Joanne and Tim, and sister Amanda watched. The annual Kinsmen Carnival was held July 23 to 26 at the Bowmanville Recreation Complex.
