It takes place at the farm just west of Bowmanville throughout the day. There's fun for the whole family, including wagon rides, a creative playground, magician, petting zoo, and a straw maze. MONDAY, JULY 4TH VISUAL ARTS CENTRE BEGINS SUMMER PROGRAM -- The Visual Arts Centre will be offering its "Kids at the Mill" day camps throughout July and August. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Topics range from basic painting and drawing to pottery, crafts of the world, botany and bugs, and much more. Each morning, there will be visits by special guest artists sharing their skills in areas such as painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, drama, story-telling, and music. SAMAC PAINTERS' SHOW - The opening reception of the Samac Painters Show is set for July 4, from noon to two p.m. at the Clarington Administrative Centre in Bowmanville. The purpose of these paintings is to perpetuate the memory of the late Col. R.S. (Sam) McLaughlin. Each of the paintings depicts an event, a place or achievement associated with Col. McLaughlin's life. Please come and meet the artists and see some wonderful "works of art. This is the first time these painters have been shown as a group outside the Camp Samac Art Festival. WEDNESDAY, JULY 6TH WINE AND STRAWBERRY SOCIAL - The Auxiliary to Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville, will hold its annual Wine and Strawberry Social on Wednesday, July 6th at 2 p.m. It takes place in the Bowmanville Lions Centre on Beech Ave. Included in the program is a mini fashion show offering clothes from Leisure Lady. GO WILD AT THE LIBRARY -- Children are invited to Go Wild at the Library this summer. There will be a kick-off for the summer reading club on Wednesday, July 6, at all three branches from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Kids can create a button, enter a book draw, and participate in terrific activities. At the Bowmanville branch, they can watch a pet care video and try out a model airplane flight simulator. The Newcastle Village branch will have a spy school game and activities from the book, Wanna Bet. The Clarke Branch will also have challenges from the Wanna Bet book. For further information, call 623-7322 or 9874844. ■eeeeeeeeeee THE GREAT FARINI - A play based on the life and times of the rope-walker known by the stage name of The Great Farini will be presented by the Fourth Line Theatre Company in Cavan Township. The play opens July 6 and continues to August 7. Farini (whose real name was Bill Hunt) was a resident of Bowmanville in his youth. In 1859, he walked a tightrope across the main four comers of Bowmanville (King St. and Temperance St.) in preparation for one of his famous crossings of the Niagara gorge. THURSDAY, JULY 7TH NEW EXHIBIT AT ART GALLERY-- Pam Patterson, an artist with a background as a performer, visual artist, teacher and scholar, will have an exhibit of work at the Visual Arts Centre from July 7 to August 19th. The show is entitled "Mapping the Familial." There will be an opening of the exhibition on Thursday, July 7, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. SATURDAY, JULY 9TH SUMMER GARDEN TOUR -Gardens in Whitby, Brooklin, Columbus, Courtice, Orono, Oshawa and Uxbridge will be featured at a Summer Garden Tour taking place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from The Station Gallery in Whitby. (Call: 668-4185. Coming Up... TOPS OPEN HOUSE - TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) has opened a new branch in Newcastle. This is a non-profit organization founded over 40 years ago to help and support those interested in weight loss or weight maintenance. Members exchange ideas, and recipes and hold contests. Meetings are motivational, educational and fun. TOPS meets every evening at the Newcastle Community Hall, in the Centennial Room. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. each Tuesday evening. An Open House will be held Tuesday, July 12, for those interested in learning more about this organization. DAY CAMP HAS ENVIRONMENTAL THEME - The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is operating an Earth Keepers Environmental Day Camp at the Enniskillen Conservation Area. It runs on a weekly basis from July 4 to August 12. Bus pick-up locations will be established in Whitby, Oshawa and Bowmanville. URBAN ANGLING DAY - On Saturday, July 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be an Urban Angling Day at the Bowmanville Valley Conservation Area. This fun day of fishing is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the Bowmanville Creek Angling Association will be on hand to offer tips to help you land a big one. Fishing licences are required for those aged 18 to 64. The Bowmanville Valley Conservation Area can be reached by taking Roenigk Dr., east from Waverley Rd. GIANT FAMILY PICNIC - The Tourist Association of Durham Region invites everyone to attend a giant family picnic on Sunday, August 14, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It takes place at the Enniskillen Conservation Area. There will be fun for the whole family, including food and special activities. It's part of the Celebrate Durham '94 program which marks the 20th anniversary of the Durham Region. The Apple Blossom Awards will be presented to residential and commercial property owners who deserve to have their efforts recognized. The deadline for nominations is August 10th, with judging"to take place in the final weeks of August. Judging will be done by the Newcastle, Orono and Bowmanville Horticultural Societies. OSHAWA HOSPITAL EXPANDS DIALYSIS UNIT - Oshawa General Hospital was among Toronto area health-care facilities to receive $11 million which will be used for expanding dialysis services. Oshawa is to receive a one-time grant of $162,000 and annual funding of $909,000. This will enable the hospital to serve an additional 28 patients. Funding was announced by Ontario's health minister on Tuesday, June 28. ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS - If you want to drink, that's your business.
