V I :! t Four New Schools Announced The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, June 15,1994 3 Young Philanthropists Join Memorial Hospital's Fund-Raising Campaign From page one just 63 students, St. Stephen's had to achieve an enrollment of 500 in its present leased facility before provincial provincial capital funding could be considered. considered. According to Lome Cork- ery, chairman of the separate school board, St, Stephen's expects to have more than 500 enrolled in September. September. Although the option hasn't been ruled out, Corkery doesn't think the board would want to purchase the present premises. "These aren't the best buildings," he said. The upper floor, including the music room and girls' washroom, are not accessable to handicapped persons. The gymnasium is separated separated from the main building and is not large enough under fire code regulations regulations to accommodate the entire i school for assemblies. According to Ken Kary, superintendent superintendent of planning with the separate separate school board, the most likely scenario would be the purchase of a site on Middle Road, near Scugog Road. Including the board's own por- , tion of the cost, a total of $13.5 million million will be available for purchase of land and building construction to ' accommodate 700 pupils. The most reasonable opening date would be in September of 1996. The PVNC board is considering for its elementary school a site on Longworth Ave., a proposed street in Bowmanville to run between Middle Road and Liberty St., north of the built- up area. At present, both St. Stephen's and SL Joseph's in Bowmanville, and St. Francis of Assisi in Newcastle have many students students in portables. Elementary Schools Will Include Child Care Facilities The budget" tor tne new elementary elementary school -- including the board's own contribution -- is $4,625,000 for site and building, including $350,000 from the province for a child care facility. The expected opening date is September 1997. The Northumberland and Clar- ington School Board will have a total total budget of $5,139,000 to replace the existing Newcastle Elementary School which is currently home to about 400 students. There are two portables now, with the likelihood of more to be added in the fall. Junior Junior and senior kindergarten students with Elizabeth Belanger-Linkletter CTC Over the last few weeks I have given you a number of articles on Canadian provinces, provinces, but for those of you who have a little adventure in your heart I would like to suggest to you the southwestern United States. My husband and I have just returned from a conference on travel in that area and I was astonished at the majestic sight of the Grand Canyon and the unique vegetation in the state of Arizona. The Grand Canyon is certainly certainly the most wondrous of Nature's seven wonders and understandably the south- west's most popular attraction. If you have a few more days for adventure a mule pack team down into the Canyon will be a memory you will never forget, BUT book this early as they sell out up to 1 year in advance. If you choose not to sit on a mule for 3 or 4 days a leisurely leisurely drive would be a good way to enjoy the countryside and scenery. Since you are in the area, you should take time to view the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead which are not far away. Of course, so also is Las Vegas with its many attractions. Further renovations are not an option because of the age and condition condition of the building. Bob Willsher, Ward Three trustee trustee for Clarke/Newcastle, said he was delighted with the news. "It means the children of the village village will be united again... Clearly the current facilities are not appropriate appropriate in terms of the number of students. students. The layout of the building is difficult. I'm looking forward to a decent gymnasium." Debbie Nolan, also a Ward Three Trustee for Clarke/Newcastle, said: "Hopefully we can return the community community back to one building. It's good news in this economy." The Northumberland and Clar- ington school board will have a total total budget of $5,028,000 for the new Martin Road Elementary School for both construction, child care centre and site. The school would be located west of Martin Road and north of Baseline Road in Bowmanville. Projected Projected enrollment for the junior kindergarten kindergarten to Grade Six school is 500 students. "It's very important for this area which is the most rapidly growing in the board," says trustee Charmaine Dunn who with Michael Slocombe, represent the Bowmanville Bowmanville area. The new Martin Road Elementary School would relieve the pressure on Waverley Road Public Public School which currently has 10 portables. Both boards will have to select appropriate sites and choose architects architects before construction begins. W Last Thursday, a group of the youngest donors to Memorial Hospital's equipment campaign presented presented the Foundation Board Chairman Rex Walters with the money they raised. Handing Walters the money money is Ryan Swan. He was among a group of youngsters who raised money by producing and selling newspapers for and by kids. They raised $18. Their donation will be applied towards the campaign target target of $250,000. While some people might think the $18 is just a drop in the bucket, these kids: Katie and Andrea Yateman, Robert and Andrew Hannah, Tyler and Ryan Swan, Sarah Neil know that every penny counts. Ryan is shown presenting Walters with the money, while he is adjusting the indicator arrow arrow on the "We're Better Together" sign at the hospital.
