4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, April 13,1994 Section Two Canadian Club Learns About the Role of the Family During the 90's Families in the 90's may differ in structure from those of the post-war years, but their function remains the same. Carolyn Hitchinson, of the Easter Seal Society, delivered an informative informative speech concerning the family's family's role in today's world to the Bowmanville Men's Canadian Club and their wives at Maple Grove United United Church on Wednesday April 6. "Among the functions of the family family in the community arc those of nurturing, nurturing, protection, education and culture," culture," Ms. Hitchinson said, pointing out that family bonds help us to become become wiser individuals, providing security, security, stability, enjoyment, and the strength of will to develop stronger relationships and live with the courage courage of our convictions. "Globally, the International Year of the Family (1994) will be a year to reflect upon changing family struc tures and issues that put stress upon the family environment," Ms. Hitchinson Hitchinson said. . The audience was reminded that single-parent families arc not new. During the 1920's, 30's and 40's, the desperate search for employment, the realities of war, and premature death from disease left many to cope with child-rearing on their own. Daily family life in Canada, however, however, has changed irrevocably since society has become urbanized and relatively affluent. More meals arc eaten out, more child care takes place outside the home, and families have grown smaller, healthier and arc living living longer. Technology, in the form of computers computers and televisions, means fewer family games are played. But this same technology also makes it possible possible for separated and extended families families to communicate more frequently Steve Nimigon, (left) president of the Bowmanville Men's Canadian Canadian Club, is pictured with some of the head table guests at the April 6 meeting. From left are: Mr. Nimigon, Joan Mann, Ted Mann (who introduced the guest speaker), Carolyn Hitchinson (guest speaker), Wayne Blackburn (who thanked the speaker) and Joan Blackburn. The Ladies' Night took place at the Maple Grove United Church. The award-winning singing group known as Déjà Vu entertained members of the Bowmanville Men's Canadian Club and their wives last week during the club's annual Ladies' Night. V.A. Silgallls, P. Eng. Commissioner of Works © Clubs and Organizations Durham East Dairy Club Holds First Meeting and effectively. The boundaries of male and female female roles very greatly in families, but making any arrangement work depends upon communication, particularly particularly listening skills, and the willingness willingness to place the family first. "Each family sets its own paradigms paradigms of behaviour expectations, curfews, curfews, television monitoring etc...," Ms. Hutchinson said, explaining that cultural differences shape our values and beliefs. Canadians emphasize delayed gratification, education, personal success success and home ownership. Others place less importance on the future and the need to acquire land. Caregiving the young and the old affects all cultures, however, with women mainly responsible, giving, on average, fifty-eight percent of their time to this task. This may include include caring for disabled children, most of whom live at home. "In the Durham Region, we have 402 children registered with the Easter Easter Seal Society, 45 in the Clarington area," she said, adding that the society society was first founded in 1922, receiving receiving funds from the Rotary Club. The polio epidemic of the thirties and forties forties left many more children in need of help. Accomplishments of the Easter Seal Society include a 1931 public relations effort which resulted in the mandatory pasteurizing of milk. Then, in 1935, John David Eaton chaired a fundraising campaign which made possible die establishment establishment of the first district nurse. In 1937, Blue Mountain camp at the south end of Georgian Bay was set up for polio-affected children. The Easter Seal Society had done much to change public attitudes toward toward those with disabilities from the years when crippled children were hidden away through guilt and superstition superstition to today's young people fighting fighting for the right to live independently, independently, to be educated and work in mainstream society. Technology is helping, blit institutions fearful of lawsuits are often reluctant to cooperate. cooperate. The rest of Ladies' Night was devoted devoted to prizes and entertainment by the award-winning women's choir, the Déjà Vu Singers, under the direction direction of Cathy Masulka. With a lovely purity of tone and excellent diction, they sang a variety of show tunes and received a well-deserved standing ovation for their efforts. Outgoing president Steve Nimigon Nimigon was the victim of the witty, but affectionate, roasting by Garnet Rickard, Rickard, which brought the evening to a delightful conclusion.
