The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, April 6,1994 9 I By Brad $Celh/ Buffalo Begins Defense of Lacrosse Title on Saturday With their famous 22-game winning streak long since ended, the Buffalo Buffalo Bandits of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League have set their focus on continuing a streak that is of even more importance to them. Copping their third straight league championship. The two-lime defending league champions will begin defence of that title this Saturday night in Buffalo when they open the semi-final playoff round against Detroit. Buffalo, who finished first in the National Division with a 6-2 record, is heavily favored to advance to a third straight league final. In the regular regular season finale in front of a sold-out crowd in Buffalo, the Bandits handed Detroit an 18-10 loss. But two of Detroit's better players weren't in the lineup due to suspensions. suspensions. "We aren't approaching this game as being easy," said Jim Veltman, a phys-ed teacher at Durham Christian High School, and captain of the Buffalo team. "Last week means nothing. It's the playoffs now and it's a one-game winner- take-all series. If we don't play well, we'll be out." In that final regular season game against Detroit, Veltman had four goals and five assists, solidifying his spot among the top 10 scorers in the league. In the only other meeting between the two clubs this year, Buffalo escaped escaped with a narrow 17-16 victory. The two losses to Buffalo left Detroit in second place in the division with a respectable 5-3 record. The past season was a memorable one for Buffalo. They continued a winning streak that was started in February of 1992, spanning a period of 22 games. During that streak, they posted back-to- back league championship wins. The streak was approaching the longest in the history of pro sports which was set by the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA in 1972, when they went 33 games before suffering a loss. It all came to an end in game five of the regular season when, in front of a capacity crowd at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, the Boston Blazers pulled off a 14-10 win. Before the season ended, Buffalo lost a second, game to Philadelphia, who finished first overall in the American Division. If nothing else, the two losses signalled to the other teams in the league that the Bandits aren't invincible. "That will probably affect the other teams more than ours because I believe in our team and our abilities," said Veltman. "I've been telling the team that it's up to us if we win or lose in the playoffs because we have the better team talent-wise." The other semi-final between Philadelphia and New York should be a dandy. The teams split their two games during the regular season. "Philadelphia are a lot like us," assessed Veltman, "on paper, they are the better team." In addition to experience being in Buffalo's favour, they will also enjoy enjoy the luxury of playing in front of a hometown sellout crowd this Saturday Saturday night against Detroit. "It's always a big advantage for us," Veltman agreed. "It really seams to get us pumped up and ready to play. "It sends a message to the other team that they will have to play their Jœst to beat us." . Early Sunday morning the baby bulls, with friends and family in tow, travelled the hallways of MLG looking at old pictures and soaking up the atmosphere that one of hockey's hockey's greatest shrines emits, as they waited to enter the visitors dressing room. The coaching staff opened the room up for all their fans to enter and get a sense of what the boys were experiencing. experiencing. Cameras flashed and VCR recorders hummed as this day will never be forgotten. The players were very excited as the bufferflies surmounted, but they still seemed focused on the game at hand.
