Bowmanville Toastmasters arc excited excited by the opportunities that lie ahead in the new year. We will soar to new heights of accomplishments as we re-examine our goals and reconfirm reconfirm our commitment to helping our members clearly and concisely, develop and strengthen our leadership leadership and achieve self-development goals that we have set for ourselves. The meeting was called to order at 7:30. T.M. Archibald, chairman for the evening, welcomed all T.M.'s to make a fresh start in the new year. It's a very easy time of the year to make a commitment, put aside all problems of 1993. Let's make a fresh start. Let's shift into gear, give ourselves ourselves another chance. We should, keep our eyes open always looking ahead with a goal. This new season of winter gives us challenges. T.M. Archibald introduced his head table for the meeting. General Evaluator-was T.M. Lcctooze. T.M. MacGillivray was Toastmaster for the evening and T.M. Glasbcrgcn was Table Topics Master. The business portion of the meeting meeting was very interesting and had a lot of variety. Table Topic Master called on members not scheduled to speak on the program. Table Topics is the ability to think and speak on your feet. Table Master Glasbergen chose as his topic, "History of the Claring- ton area." Members were called upon to give an impromptu one minute talk on this subject. Table Topics Trophy was presented presented to T.M. Christl for his indepth one minute presentation about the history of Durham. The prestige "Spark Plug" trophy was presented to T.M. Barnes for contributing input and challenging T.M.'s during the business business portion of the meeting. Toastmaster of the meeting T.M. MacGillivray offered words of thanks to the president for his inspiring inspiring thoughts for a new season. He explained explained die duties of the timer, gram marian, Topic Master and general evaluator. There were two speakers for the meeting. Speaker #1. T.M. Christl, presented an advanced 8-10 minute Manual Speech on "Consumer Tips". He applied these tips to Bowmanville T.M. Club. T.M. Christl reminded us about the importance of commitment and involvement. We will continue to build a friendly, successful club. T.M. Christl asked the members to re-examine our goals for 1994. Speaker #2, T.M. Lise's title for Manual Speech #9, 8-10 minutes, "Think Global - Act Local". An active active participant of S.E.A.P. Darlington Darlington questioned that nuclear power was not the answer to energy shortages shortages and weren't satisfied about the safety of disposing of radioactive waste. T.M. Lise gave the sequence of expansion of nuclear power around the world up to today. He explained explained that Sweden and Japan have cut their nuclear power. Through radiation, radiation, many countries have faced destruction of their culture. T.M. Lise presented many facts about nuclear power. He encouraged people to speak up when you think something is wrong, because that is democracy. We must stop being gluttons of energy. energy. Canadians are the biggest consumers consumers of energy per person in the world. We have already started to reduce reduce ic. fluorescent tubes for lighting and energy efficient refrigerators etc. Are you thinking globally and acting locally? Bronze award from -Toastmasters International. T.M. Lcctooze also was acclaimed T.M. for the month of December. This award is in recognition of working working beyond the regular agendas and assisting the club members. Best Evaluator trophy was won and tied by T.M. Holder and T.M. Konzel- mann. Best Speech Trophy was presented presented to T.M. Lise. Christmas Social by Carol Alder The Bowmanville Business and Professional Women's Club welcomed welcomed in the festive season with a Christmas social evening on December December 9th. A pleasant evening was enjoyed enjoyed by guests and members in attendance attendance which featured a German buffet at Café Cosima' in Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Club members Maureen Mumford captivated all with her special rendition rendition of "Twas The Night Before Christmas." As well, donations from club members were presented to Francine Nicholas to support Alliance Alliance House, a women's shelter to be established in Bowmanville. Women belonging to Bowmanville Bowmanville B.P.W. Club are part of an International International Federation having opportunities opportunities to form friendships with other working women and establish a support support network for personal and career advancement. Next month the club will have a special lecture by Carol Lohncs Shaipc, the B.P.W. Club's provincial representative for NAC (National Action Action Committee for the Status of Women) which is Canada's largest feminist organization. The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 20th at the Port Darlington Marina Hotel.
