» The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, December 1, 1993 5 Annual Turkey Supper Held at Salvation Army Headquarters Group Working on Clean-up Criteria By John Veldhuis The Clarington Community Liaison Liaison Group has been working very hard on establishing clean-up criteria for the Port Granby site. Clean-up criteria is the establishment establishment of levels or standards to which the property must be cleaned up' when the low-level radioactive wastes that have been dumped there since the 1950's are removed. But how much has to be moved and when do you know you have made the site clean enough? To arrive at that answer, we first of all have to realize that some of the contaminants in the waste site are found anywhere. For example, one of the contaminants is arsenic. You can find some arsenic almost anywhere anywhere including in your own front and backyard. The level of arsenic is usually very low though and does not cause any problems. Around the Port Granby dump site, the level of arsenic arsenic in the ground which occurs naturally naturally is 4.4 parts per million of soil. This is called the background level. It varies from place to place, but always always occurs there naturally. When one hundred parks in Ontario Ontario were tested for 'background levels' levels' of arsenic it was found that the range of naturally occurring levels or background level was between clev- ....... , en parts per million to seventeen The tabies were set and the turkeys were roasting. Everything was ready for the Salvation Army's tur- parts per million in ninety-eight of key supper on Saturday, November 27 when The Statesman photographer dropped by the Salvation the parks. Don't you just love these letters? The Clarington Community Liaison Liaison Group next looked at available data on health effects of arsenic on humans and found that the medical experts recommend that plant life not exposed to levels of arsenic of over twenty-five parts per million, although although in some industrial sites, levels as high as 500 ppm (part per million) are permitted. The question now left is to which of these levels should the Port Granby Granby site be clcancd-up? 4.4 ppm is very expensive but background level, 11-17 is expensive but like many gt.
