Gord Mills, the New Democratic Party MPP, for Durham East, was one of over a dozen supporters at NDP headquarters on King Street. The Liberals won such support because voters were unwilling to face reality, he said. "They saw this sort of fuzzy warmth with the Liberals", he said. People figured that by going back to the Liberals , they could avoid the deficit and avoid coming to grips with the problems facing the country country today. Supporters at Reform Party headquarters headquarters in Oshawa were, by turns, celebrating party gains in western Canada while accepting the news of defeat in their own riding. The Reform Party had not run before in Durham, but still managed to come away with 18,500 votes, which left the Conservatives trailing trailing in third place. Reform candidate Ian Smyth had dreamed of a victory, but said the local showing was beyond his expectations. expectations. "We started with nothing. nothing. We didn't have the elite behind us." The huge Liberal majority disturbs disturbs Smyth. "By electing a Liberal majority, voters have literally handed them a blank cheque to do with what they want for the next five years." "Canada has taken a grave step backwards by electing the Liberals, said Smyth. They don't have a clue about fiscal responsibility or deficit reduction, he added. His vision for Reform is positive. Di UOUR YOKE HEARD. Coining in behind the Liberals, but ahead of the Tories, the Refoim Party won 18,500 votes. Not only did the Reform Party win over many old-line Conservatives, Conservatives, Smyth said, but it attracted a large youth vote too. Young voters realize they will be the ones who'll wind up paying for the spending habits of today's elected leaders if tilings don't change, he explained. The crowd at Christian Heritage Party headquarters was in a hopeful mood as the earliest results started coming in. In Durham, the CHP gained 705 votes, down from 1,665 in the last federal election. Durham's CHP candidate, Durk Bruinsma, was encouraged by news that CHP candidates in the west had a good showing in some preelection preelection polls.
