The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, October 6,1993 7 By Brad Kelly See the Maple Leafs At the Montreal Forum What better way is there for a family to take in a sports outing together than to attend an afternoon Blue Jays game at the SkyDome? Or, if you're one of the fortunate ones, there's the possibility of scooping up some hockey tickets and taking your son or daughter to a Toronto Maple Leaf game. At one time, the Toronto Argonauts were included in the same company company as those mentioned above, but interest in attending their games has since dwindled. In the future, the choice of viewing a professional basketball game will be added when the NBA arrives in Toronto. But what about those who are a little more adventurous than being satisfied satisfied with travelling the 401 into Toronto. What about the sports fan who would like to escape the frustrations that surround them through the week? Those who want to kick back and relax, take in a sporting event, and leave all the arrangements to somebody somebody else? Well, that opportunity exists. An advertisement in last week's Statesman invited people to attend a hockey game at the Montreal Forum pitting the Canadiens against the Maple Leafs. When that ad appeared, only 20 seats remained on a second bus that was going to the game. Those seats have since been sold. In fact, the people at Goliger's Travel Travel in Bowmanville received 35 calls from people wanting to reserve a scat. So, like any good business would do, they are expanding to meet the needs of their customers. A third bus has been added, with approximately 25 seats still remaining. "We travel in groups, which a lot of people like, and we look after all the details," said organizer Jim Knight, on the popularity of the weekend getaway package. The trip he is planning to Montreal on October 30-31 includes bus transportation to Montreal, one night's accommodation, a ticket to the game and a buffet breakfast on Sunday morning. For the average fan, transportation and a room wouldn't necessarily be that difficult to obtain. But, just try to get a ticket to view a game at the Forum involving the defending Stanley Cup champions. Not to mention that the'Maple Leafs are providing the opposition. Scalpers will be selling a pair of tickets to the game for the same price as the complete package being offered by Goliger's Travel. It's not the first time that the travel agency has ventured into the area of sports travel packages. "There weren't a whole lot of agencies doing it in our neck of the woods," said Knight. "We carved a little niche and everything has gone really well." In 1992, area fans were given the opportunity to visit Cleveland during trips that took place in June and August. In June of this year, a busload travelled to Detroit. There was also a package available in March of this year to attend some spring training games of the Toronto Blue Jays. As in past trips, everything went well. "I handed out a questionnaire after the Florida trip and asked the people-how people-how they would rate the trip on a scale of 1-10 (ten being the highest). highest). Of the responses I got, every'one of them was an eight or higher," said Knight. A tour guide on each bus helps to monitor events during the trip. Families Families who are hesitant about taking one of the trips because of the rowdiness rowdiness that could evolve on the bus need not worry. All the precautions are taken to make it an enjoyable outing for everyone. "If things got out of hand, it would put a damper on the trip fçr a family," family," said Knight. - Buses are scheduled to leave Bowmanville on Saturday, October 30, before noon. Plans are being made to leave Montreal the following day before noon so everyone will be home in time for Halloween. It's fitting that a trip, such as this would be held on the same weekend as Halloween. Unlike the Halloween tradition, there are no tricks, just ^treats planned for those who board the bus. Newcastle Oldtimers Win by Robert E. Stiles The Newcastle Oldlimers'opened up their season on Sunday, October 3, with a 6-3 victory over Hockin at the Newcastle Memorial Arena. We would like to thank Jeff Pearce for looking after the refereeing refereeing and Roger Tittcrton for doing the timekeeping, Newcastle will play against McIntosh on Friday at 9:30 p.m., and against the Rehab (Clinic) on Sunday, October 10, in Newcastle at 11:30 a.m. by Brad Kelly With the pre-season now concluded, concluded, coach Mark Watson has promised that changes will be made with his Bowmanville Goodyear Eagles. Eagles. That may not be as drastic as it first sounds. Though his club posted only two victories in seven outings, Watson has been impressed with a lot of what he's seen. But there is another side. A side in which he will change. "We have some discipline problems problems on the ice, but that is going to change in a hurry," he said. The comments came after a rather rather lacklustre performance on Sunday Sunday night against a very highly skilled team from Port Perry. Three power play goals by the visitors in the second period, and another in the third, lifted them to an easy 8-3 victory. The loss was the second in a row that Bowmanville suffered to Port Perry to close out the pre-season. Last Thursday, Port Perry won on their home ice by a score of 9-4. Now, after seven games in which to shed any off-season rust, Bow- manvillc begins the defence of their Central League title on Friday night in Uxbridge. And that game couldn't come soon enough for both the players and die coaching staff. "It (the pre-season) begins to drag on, and everybody just wants to get on with the season," said Watson. Before Friday's league opener, there are still some decisions to be made regarding the roster. Six players - four forwards and two defence defence - are still vying for three spots on the team. In goal, there are still three candidates in the hunt for the backup role to overager Drew Campbell. Sarah Couch, who tended goal for the Eagles last season, asked for her release from the club following Sunday's game. That leaves Chris McCarthy, Jason Jason Bailey and Steve Oke in contention. contention. Bailey and Oke played in Sunday's Sunday's loss, with neither one looking particularly sharp. Final cuts were expected to made made following Tuesday's practice. One of the rookies who will avoid the uncertainty of making the club is ccntreman Scan Brown, who was one of the first players the team signed when training camp opened. The slick skating centreman had a strong training camp, and was one of the few players who managed to find his scoring touch, including a goal in Sunday's loss to Port Perry. "He can be a dominant player because he has a scoring touch and is good with the puck," said Watson of the rookie. "I think he is going to score a lot of goals, which we'll need. We don't have too many sharpshooters." sharpshooters." • . Brown, an OAC student at Bow-, manville High School this year, rose through the ranks of the Bowmanville Bowmanville minor hockey system. Last year, he captained the Central Ontario Ontario Wolves 'AAA' midget team. Though only in his first year of junior hockey, he will be relied on heavily to provide some scoring punch. "That's what they are looking for me to do," said Brown,' who potted potted 30 goals last year. Brown will anchor most likely the strongest position on the team. Veterans Brad Robinson and Dave Stockton, along with rookie Ryan Becker form a formidable nucleus of centremen for the club. THE SCOOP - Scoring the other other Bowmanville goals on Sunday night were Jeff Murphy and Kevin Plummcr...Drew Allenby, who played defence for the club the past couple of seasons, may surface this year. He is intending to move home from Ottawa..."Our guys don't know the system yet, but in a couple of months we'll be fine," said coach Watson on the arrival of the regular season.
