Letters to the Editor AIDS Illness Springs from Behaviour Deemed to be "Morally Reprehensible" Dear Sir: Once more I find it needful to respond respond to the writings of Ms. Richards' in her "Outlook" column. I am referring referring to her article on AIDS, August 11, 1993. At the risk of being accused accused of being "judgmental and homophobic," homophobic," I must contend for the fact that AIDS is indeed a moral issue issue having everything to do with God and His Law. I do not know by what standard Ms. Richards finds herself able to repeatedly declare that AIDS is not a moral issue, but the standard by wliich Christians seek to measure all things is the Word of God. It is true that AIDS is a grave health issue of our times, but it can also be said that it is a health issue arising from behavioral patterns which arc, according to the Scripture,' morally reprehensible, God's Word is very clear when it speaks of the fact that "marriage is honourable in all,' and. the bed undefiled," but it also speaks of God's judgment upon "whoremongers and adulterers" (Hcb. 13:4). God's Word is also clear when it condemns moral perversion such as homosexuality and states that those who give themselves over to such receive "in themselves that rec ompense of their error which is meet" (Rom. 1:27). Ms. Richards makes the assumption assumption that because Christians condemn the shameful behaviour of homosexuality homosexuality and suggest that AIDs may be God's judgment upon such activity, that they arc also saying that those who have involved themselves in such high risk behaviour "deserve to die from AIDS." That is a false and misleading deduction. The historic position, of the Christian Church has been that "vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord." It is not being judgmental, therefore, to deduce from what we arc told in the Word of God and from what we see happening happening in society, that God's judgments (both temporal and eternal) are upon those who thumb their nose at His Holy Law. The same Lord who told us "judge not lest ye be judged," went on to declare, "by their fruits, ye shall know them." It should also be said that Ms. Richards hasn't the faintest notion of what the Christian message is as that message is articulated in Scripture. The Christian message is "that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." The Christian mes sage is that "the soul that sinneth, it shall die." The Christian message is that Christ Jesus came into this world to save sinners. He came not just to save them from the consequences of their sin (temporal and eternal punishment), punishment), but from sin itself. Christ came into this world to deliver men and women from such things as homosexuality. homosexuality. He did not come in order order to condone it under a false apprehension apprehension of what it means to "love they neighbour as thyself." Is it unloving to remind men and women of the wrath of judgment of God? Is it homophobic to tell men and women that "they who do such things shall not enter the kingdom of God?" It may be according to Ms. Richards' standard, but not according to the standard of God's Word. It is my contention that Ms. Richards Richards has done a great disservice to our community by failing to make it clear that if you want to avoid contracting contracting AIDS, you should obey God's Word and maintain a sexual relationship that is monogamously carried on in the context of the sanctity sanctity of the marriage union. Make no mistake, many people have contracted this dreadful disease through no fault of their own (ex. blood transfusions, sexuality infidelity infidelity by one's marriage partner, etc.). The fact remains, however, that this disease continues to grow and to spread chiefly through illicit sexual behaviour and IV drug use by those who think themselves wiser than God, and who refuse to heed His Word. Let us be truthful in instructing our children as to how this disease may be avoided. It is not avoided by "safe sex" or by wearing a condom (these are known to fail at least one third of the time). AIDS is avoided by maintaining one's virginity until marriage and then being faithful to that spouse until death. Our children need to know that sex was ordained by God for the marriage relationship. When these tntths arc instilled in our young people's minds and behaviour, we can assure them that such chastity works 100% of the time in preventing preventing AIDS. Sincerely, Rev. Claude D. DePrine, III Pastor Promiscuity is The cause of AIDS Disease Dear Editor: „ Thank you for the articles by Laura Laura J. Richards on "Dealing with AIDS in Durham" on pages 1,3,6 and 7 in your paper of August 11,1993. We appreciate her candid writing about AIDS, but cannot agree with some of her conclusions. She writes, "People who are H IV positive and have full-blown cases of AIDS arc often stigmatized. The myths sunrounding AIDS add to this" (pp.1,3). One of these myths is that the cause of AIDS is not known. This is truly myth! It becomes most apparent when Laura quotes Louise Anderson from the Durham AIDS Committee, "You have to work really hard to become become infected" (p.6). Then she goes on to explain how in a number of ways one may become infected, "that if you want to die a slow and lingering lingering death due to a number of immune system breakdowns, you should make note of the following types of risky behaviors you should practice diligently." The origin of AIDS is not a secret. Homosexuality has been the main contributing factor in the downfall of civilizations before this. When we do not acknowledge that AIDS is self- inflicted, a promiscuous life-style will destroy ours also! From "HIV/AIDS a Christian Response" Response" Laura quotes the following "How people become infected is not the issue. Die issue is that they are infected and we need to respond in a positive way. "As Christians we arc called to love others, to be compassionate and to be of service (John 12: 12-15). Jesus Jesus gave us many examples of how wo should love each other and, as I lis followers we must follow His example." example." It goes without saying that we must respond positively to all who have AIDS for which they cannot be held responsible. They are the victims victims of others who choose to live promiscuous promiscuous lives, and we weep with them. But there is more here. The child who is restrained from swimming in the pool without supervision is not in danger of drowning, On the other hand, the child who is not restrained may drown in the same pool. It is love that makes parents restrain their children from swimming without supervision. supervision. It is another kind of love that brings people to comfort the parents parents of the child who drowned for lack of restraint. Restraining love Is much to be preferred over the love that Is demonstrated demonstrated after a tragedy has occurred. It is also Biblical and therefore the Christian way. For Jesus said, "If you love Me keep My commandments" (John 1*1:15). Sincerely, 0, Zekveld COME IN FOR A PLEASANTLY SURPRISING DEAL! 1993 Plymouth Acclaim GET 5.
