Richards A seven-member committee has been commissioned to look at trimming trimming the costs of regional government. government. Durham Regional Chairman Gary Herrema; Chief Administrative Administrative Officer Gary Cubitt; Commissioner Commissioner of Finance Jack Gartley and Councillors Mike Armstrong, Susan Para, Ross Batten, and Yvonne Christie have been charged with the mission to cut services not deemed to be essential from the regional budget. The trimming comes on the heels of the provincial government's recently recently announced cutbacks. Some councillors haggled over the fact that a new committee was to be struck to do the cost-cutting. Oshawa Councillor Brian Nicholson Nicholson said: "We already have a workable workable structure" to deal with budgets. We have a competent Financial Administration Administration Committee who can do just that." However, other councillors who agreed with the formation of a new committee said the committee members members would provide an objective eye when scrutinizing this year's budget. Before the debate escalated, Chairman Herrema reminded the group the committee would not be making the cuts without having the heads of regional departments present at their meetings. To that end, Mayor James Witty, of Ajax, told the chairman to not forget his own role on the Police Services Board. "They may well be one of the biggest players in this," Mayor Witty Witty noted. Town of Newcastle Mayor Diane Hamrc said the idea is to form a special special committee "to review every service service we give. "We know where we can cut and don't always ask the questions an outsider would," Mayor Hamrc pointed out to the councillors who objected to the new committee. The committee will be looking at the 1993 budget with a whole new point of view, Mayor Hamre advised. advised. The new committee members will review all regional services with the department commissioners. Their recommendations are to go to the regional council for final approval. approval. 1993 LOYALE Oil iiiii flegPoek C&C MOTORS 1705 DUNDAS AT LAKERIDGE RD., WHITBY 430-6666 on deductible of most insurance windshield claims plus ...
