These rules arc printed on the different different "Rabies Activity Sheets" which the children may work on in the classroom. They arc encouraged to bring their work home and share this information with their parents. In this way the parents are reminded about the rabies hazard which always exits in our Region. The Rabies Awareness Week elementary elementary school program has been effective effective in reducing the number of persons exposed to rabies in Durham Region. The Health Department has noted a steady decrease in the number number of incidents requiring investigation investigation and a dramatic decrease in the number of incidents requiring investigation investigation and a dramatic decrease in the number of persons requiring anti- rabies treatment. This translates to significant savings to our health care system, especially since the average cost of treatment is approximately $700 per person. In spite of combined efforts of health officials and the principals and teachers of the four school boards operating operating in Durham Region, occasionally occasionally an incident occurs, which results in many people being exposed to a rabid animal. Last year, it was a family in the Newcastle area which adopted a baby fox. Twenty-four people required rabies rabies shots. This year, 37 people in Bolton are receiving rabies shots after after exposure to a recently adopted stray pup. In 1986, a stray pup roamed through PorfPerry exposing over 100 people. It is therefore, necessary to continually promote rabies awareness, awareness, in order to keep such incidents to a minimum.
