? The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, November 6,1991 19 ON NOVEMBER 12TH. VOTE MATTHEW For Mayor ol Newcastle BUSINESSMEN LOOKING AT THEIR INCOME STATEMENTS ALWAYS LOOK TO THE BOTTOM LINE. WHEN YOU'RE IN BUSINESS OR OPERATING A FARM OR RUNNING A HOUSEHOLD BUDGET OR MANAGING THE VARIOUS INTERESTS OF A FAMILY, YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE BOTTOM LINE: WHAT CAN WE AFFORD? WHAT CAN WE DO IN THE TIME WE'VE GOT? IS IT THE RIGHT THING TO DO? WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE FOR NEWCASTLE? Newcastle obviously needs something new -- new vision, new energy and new sense of public responsibility at Town Hall. And the time for action is now. WHAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE FOR OUR MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT? IT SHOULD BE RUN ON A MORE BUSINESS-LIKE BASIS! Do you know how many people tell me that they can't get through to Town Hall? How many elected elected politicians and Town Hall staff seem opposed to progress? Has Newcastle lost its way? Is there any strategic plan for Newcastle? Bottom Line: Let's have a clear idea of what Newcastle should be. Let's be responsive and forward-looking forward-looking for a change. For a change let's be financially responsible. Why shouldn't we have a good planning process to manage growth, while keeping all the important values and advantages of a smaller community? AND WHAT ABOUT RESPONSIBLE TAXATION? Isn't it time to keep taxes and expenditures at responsible levels? Why shouldn't Newcastle have more respect for the taxpayer's dollar? We should be striving for a zero percent tax increase, year- to-year, with caps on all municipal salaries, especially Council. Bottom Line: There should be no new taxes on the homeowner. SHOULDN'T WE BE THINKING HARD ABOUT NEW BUSINESS AND CLEAN INDUSTRY? Isn't it time for us to attract new business and clean industry? Isn't it time to create new jobs, broaden broaden the tax base and diversify the economy? Bottom Line: Isn't it time to bring prosperity to our municipality? AND THE ENVIRONMENT We all agree that it's time to re-cycle everything possible right here in Newcastle. Let's have some action. Let's create new business and employment as we re-cycle and contribute to the pleasant environment that attracted us here in the first place. Bottom Line: Create allies not adversaries. The environment and jobs! The environment and new industry! WHY DON'T WE TAKE ON JOB RE-TRAINING AND FOLLOW-UP AFTER LEAVING SCHOOL AS A NECESSARY TWOSOME? Have you looked very hard at Newcastle's local economy and young people? I am very concerned, as should you be about the level of unemployment and welfare. I'm speaking now as a former high school teacher with 12 years experience in education and job training. I know education for the workplace must be a continuing process so that our young workers can find jobs in a constantly changing market. Why aren't there follow-up programs for young people after they leave school? Let's apply imagination and drive to put the process together. '■ Bottom Line: Let's help our kids and our community! NEWCASTLE NEEDS A LOCAL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM Why shouldn't a growing, caring community like Newcastle have a local transportation service by now? Bottom Line: Let's make Newcastle actually work as a community! THE BOTTOM LINE: ITS TIME FOR A NEW MAYOR FOR NEWCASTLE!
